Michael Duberry v Martin Keown

by Thaumagurist* » 04 Dec 2008 14:52

Those players came to Reading at the end of their careers (Mind you, wonder whether Duberry will retire from football when he finishes playing for Reading?), how do they compare? I don't think Keown did much for Reading and Duberry is a better player for Reading. What do you reckon?

Obviously Duberry has proven a greater success than Keown.

But I'm sure Keown was still another 7 or 8 years older than Duberry was when he first joined us.

Duberry has only just turned 33, and should still be good for another season or two, I would have thought. Good experience, good physical strength, hopefully a good influence around the kids. Keown was 38 when he moved here, and clearly past it, especially as he wasn't given a cvoaching role. Hopefully he was still a positive influence on the younger players, but you could hardly rate his reading career as successful. Or even notable.

Keown did a job for us, was a rock when he came on at Sunderland away which was a massive win for us after being a goal down and allowed us to have a sniff of the playoffs until we capitulated against Cardiff

Fair enough. He still only played 5 games, didn't he?

Duberry has to be one of the best centre halves weve had who couldn't make the side or the bench when fit.

Frankly, I think he's been under rated for most of his time here, much to Ingimarrson's benefit.

Keown was a total waste of a loan, Duberry has played a significant cameo role over the last 2 seasons. He's a much better signing than Monkey man ever was. IMO

A quite awful comparasion in all honesty.

You know what you get from Duberry. He will not lose a header, he's a strong tackler and he reads the game well. That is more than enough at this level and he still has years left in the tank. He will get better as his match fitness improves in the coming games.

Keown turned us down when he first went to Leicester after his arsenal days. He was a free transfer, and i think Coppell brought him in to help Sonko who had just broken into the first team at that point. He was the one who didn't run out for the sunday league charge at Cardiff and cost us a goal. Never played again for us IIRC

Duberry with a right cross in first rounds puts Keown on his Arse, but not one to give up Keown returns to his feet and battles on for 2 more rounds before Duberry catchs him with his classic upper cut ending it with a knock out

Duberry wins easily

Quite right. Keown turned that game.

Never understood the vitriol surrounding the loan signings of Keown and Ferdinand. Suspect their influence off the field more than compensated for the lesser impact on the pitch. You can count on one finger, the loan signings – over the last 10 years – that have been truly made the difference, and Upson’s now an England regular. LittIe, for one, was really quite poor, whilst on loan from Burnley. Certainly wouldn’t be averse to a seasoned pro or two on loan, just to nudge us closer to promotion.

I think doobs has been solid for us when he has played especially when he first joined from stoke. I don't agree that he came here to finish his career as he was only 30 when he joined which is young for a defender.

Ian Royal Keown was a total waste of a loan

He wasn't a loan signing. He was a free agent when he came to us.

Didn't our form absolutely disintegrate that season? Were they brought in as it disintegrated or before?

Anyway, Keown played about 5 games for us, Ferdinand about double that. Impact on the pitch - minimal, impact behind the scenes? Who knows.

Oh, and if you want to see a small squad, Soccerbase, Reading squad, 04/05

Duberry all day. I think that when SC bought in Keown and Firdinand he was getting a bit desperate in trying to make the play-offs they could've worked out for us it just happens that they didn't.
