Article on Daniel Williams

by JoshIlanBlogs » 27 Jun 2013 11:12

Hi guys,

I am Josh Ilan, an aspiring football journalist and a long-suffering Barnet fan.

It would be much appreciated if you could read my article on "Daniel Williams' move to Reading". If you could rate article at the top of the page, that would be great - comments on either this forum or the blog would also be brilliant.

Here is the link to it: http://thefootballleague72.wordpress.com/2013/06/26/daniel-williams-joins-reading-from-hoffenheim/

Out of interest, what are Michael Hector's chances of being involved with your first-team squad next season? One of the best players Barnet have had in the past few years.

Thanks in advance and best of luck for the rest of the season,

Josh

Hi mate.

Hector has no chance in the first team next season. He's still some way off, and apparently got pulled up for having a bad attitude in his last loan. He might have a bit of growing up to do as well as developing his own ability on the pitch.

What did you guys think of him when you had him on loan? I can see another L1 loan this season.

That's a decent write-up as well.

More chance of Big Hec playing for us than Barnet I'm afraid.

We've got Morrison, Mariappa and Pearce as our three key centre backs.

We have Gorkss as backup, but he may move on, a few players potentially capable of covering in the centre (Williams, Kelly, Carriço, Leigertwood) depending on what the manager thinks as well as four decent youth prospects in Michael Hector, Pierce Sweeney, Matt Partridge and Jake Cooper pushing on for the centre back spots. A couple of those four will go out on loan I'd imagine. Hec has had a few loans so if he went out it would probably be top end League 1 or lower Championship, although realistically he'd be fourth choice here at the very best, which I would be comfortable with him doing..

And on the article that's a decent write up, thanks.

I'd suggest making sure you proof read before posting, only a minor one but "It is not only the Bundesliga w[h]ere Williams has left his mark." [not that I can talk, I'm rubbish for spelling and grammar].

I'm not sure saying which saw "only 8 players came in". That's over 2/3rds of a first team and more than both Swansea and Norwich brought in during their first seasons in the top flight. The bigger concern was that the squad we had was top end Championship but not good enough for the Premier League, as well as the way they were utilised by the manager.

Is the £1.6m fee your reporting confirmed anywhere? If it were €2m then that would be ≈£1.704m and I've seen fees going from about €2m to £2.5m. In true Reading fashion (and I think typical of most transfers under £10m in line with the general FL recommendations?) the fee remains undisclosed.

Don't tell Snowball, but I liked the stats.

Out of curiosity, where did you get the figure of £1.6mil from?

Despite appearing only 21 times for the side bankrolled by Dietmar Hopp, his importance to the team is emphasised through them winning five times when he has featured, as opposed to three wins in 13 games without him.

Sorry to nitpick but not too sure what this stat is trying to prove.

With Williams: 1 Win per 4.2 games
Without Williams: 1 win per 4.33 games

I'm sure you'll agree it's not much difference!

Also should be 'Premier League' not 'Premiership'

He's going to be 21 next season, the same age as Morrison was when he broke through. I reckon he has a good chance of being fourth choice centre back. If he's good enough to displace our senior defenders then he'll get games, otherwise he'll provide cover and allow younger prospects (principally Partridge and Cooper) to go out on loan.

Well thought out articles with a logical and consistent thread running through them like the one produced by Josh have no place on this board.

A much better article than your rather unbalanced item published elsewhere on the move of Barnet into The Hive. Much more historic research needed there rather than just believing everything the Barnet chairman says is true.

One area of concern, though, would be Williams’ temperament. His strong will and desire often leads to over-commitment, with him having picked up a total of eight yellow cards last season – an average of one every 2.265 games.

one yellow card every 2.3 games is fine for a midfielder imo

im also very much looking forward to more discussion on his favoured truncheon

good article though, other than those two things and the things mentioned above by others

Exactly, struggle pigs get booked more often than other players. Nature of their roll.

Surely I'm not the only one to realise that what we actually needed was a grapple armadillo though? Still, I suppose Hammond could have signed another surrender monkey!

Good article. Nice and articulate, making some clear points. You could be more careful with your pronouns, I suppose, and words are generally better than stats. My main advice would be not to use the word whilst ever again in your whole life.

I'm not convinced that somebody is bound to set the Championship on fire if they failed in the Bundesliga and are only a USA international.

NIce article JoshIanBlogs with information I didn't know about Williams. So much footy writing favours style (not very good style generally unless you are Henry Winter of the Daily Telegraphy) over substance and facts (a lot of journos in my view seem to think your average punter favours a bunch of sensationalist adjectives over informative writing - which is kind of patronising to the reader). Good luck with your prospective career in journalism.

First of all, thanks for your comments - all feedback is appreciated.

@SPARTA: Very surprised about Hector having a bad attitude, as he was always one of a few players who put in 110%. I'd say he is one of the best defenders the club has had in the last decade. Very composed on the ball, strong, good in the air, great eye for a pass and confident bursting forward. Surprised he had another loan spell in League Two last season.
@Maffff/yappy: Fair points, on the fee, that is what I read but cannot remember source. Stat maybe a bit misleading!
@Yellowcoat: Was that the article published last week for the Barnet Times?
@HandsomeMan: Point taken! He did a good job in Bundesliga, so think he will do very well for you.

Thanks again and best of luck for the upcoming season.

Yes that was the one. There is a lot more to the story which is being airbrushed from history by TK and Barnet FC.
