Mr Angry As a matter of interest, does anyone know how much it cost STAR to put the team - including support staff - up before the Shrewsbury game?

Let's say 30 staff, 2 to a room, so 15 rooms, let's say £100/night, maybe about £1,500? Give or take a few hundred quid.

That feels low. I reckon double would be more accurate based purely on gut feeling. Maybe triple.

Are twin rooms that easy to find? They're pretty rare aren't they?

No, perhaps less available in the past, but plenty of hotels have twin rooms. I regularly book one in a Holiday Inn, for example.

guess they’ve got to be fed and watered too? more than what they’d need to be on a ‘day trip’

As mentioned previously, 2 or 3 times that, at least

If only prices in hotels were published somewhere….
Rooms in the Shrewsbury Holiday Inn are £100 / room.
Significant discount on multiple rooms I would think.

^ over to STAR to reveal I guess

Then maybe STAR could fund or organise match-day collections to pay for the players & staff further over-nighters

Players paying for accommodation? The PFA would whip up a storm to try to stop that, slippery slope etc. Not like the club needs any more bad PR

I presume GWL was doing the marathon for fun*, not for work. This is akin to paying out of your own pocket to stay somewhere ahead of a routine meeting or presentation, not sure how many people think they should pick up the tab for things done in the name of their job, no matter how well paid. Although perhaps GWL could try to persuade MPs that they could pay themselves for those fact-finding trips to the Caribbean/Mauritius…

Savage said in his Athletic interview that he's been paying for his own. Though I guess he's more privileged in financial support from his parents than most of them.

Getting a strange sense of deja vu. Please let it happen this time.

Edit: it has been pointed out that the journalist is Matt Hughes who has been Couhig's mouthpiece a few times. So take all the generous concessions Couhig has supposedly made with a pinch of salt.

I understand the principle of not paying for your own work related costs. But if you earn a salary of 250k on a fixed term contract which is highly dependent on your real world performance, you might consider paying for accommodation if it helps improve your chances of securing a better contract when it comes up for renewal. They don't mind giving an agent 10% of their wages, so the concept of investing in their own future isn't alien to them.

You've probably heard that several PL footballers employ their own fitness coaches and dieticians.

Your work related example to me is relevant, we are offered a flight for a trip that is the cheapest option, but people often opt to buy their own if it's at a more convenient time or they want a better airline or flight class...
