It’s 72 teams, 70 after the preliminary round. Guess it’s all working backwards from the teams due to enter the competition in later rounds, and determining how many matches you need in this round to get the right number in that round.

Preliminary Round = 4 teams (played w/c 4th August) - draw to decide the H and A teams made later today apparently.
First Round = 70 teams (winning prelim rounders, all remaining tier 4 teams plus all teams from tiers 2, 3) - ties to be played w/c 11 Aug
Second Round = 46 teams (35 first round winning teams plus the 11 PL sides NOT in Europe) - ties to be played w/c 25 August
Third Round = 32 teams (23 winning second round sides plus the 9 PL sides that are in Europe) - ties to be played wks/c 15 and 22 Sep
Fourth Round = 16 teams (presume you’re all capable of working out where those 16 come from) - to be played w/c 27 October
Fifth Round = 8 teams - to be played w/c 15 December
Semi Finals = 4 teams - to be played over two legs (one in Jan 2026 and the other in Feb 2026)
Final = 2 teams (one probably being Liverpool) played on Sunday March 22nd
