tmesis Maybe the worrying thing was that Huddersfield didn't get out of first gear. They looked weirdly uninterested, like it was a pre-season friendly.

The sad truth is that we lost some of our best players, and have brought in players who'll add depth, at best. We just aren't very good. Last season we overachieved. If we underachieve to any degree this season, staying up will be a bonus.

Of course, we could go out and sign a player or two who'll change things completely before the window shuts, but recruitment so far has reminded me of Tommy Burns' 'magnificent seven', when we just brought in players who were available, rather than ones who'd actually help.

That's a tad harsh - time may prove you right - 7 in one day is more desperate than the business we've done to date.

The lack of goal scoring chances us a worry though...

Yes we have missed you :D

Case in point, this one can't work out I never went anywhere.

I'll say one thing for you though, at least you aren't oxf*rd gus/millsy. I think my IQ drops a % every time I see a post from one of those two.

At least it makes a change from 90% of posts being from you

Chameleon Impressed by most of the new signings. Dan K and Fraser in particular look like they have a lot of potential.

There is the obvious issue though - for all the good work - 1 shot. Need a signing there.

Agree with this, thought Danny K was very good in particular

Thought he was particularly good in White Christmas, which at this rate is probably when we can expect out first gift of three points this season

Decent individual performances - just not quite there yet as a team. Jacob and Abrefa were the pick of the bunch for me.

First goal was obviously disappointing, second one was a good strike which, to be fair, and maybe got a bit lucky travelling through a crowded box.

We will never get anywhere without a natural goal scorer up front - the type who always seems to be in the right place at the right time in the box, because their movement off the ball is so good. Goals from midfield will only take you so far.

Still waiting for the lick of paint and soap in the dispensers in the SJM toilets.

WTAF, what do you base this comment on exactly? From where I was sat that certainly looked up for it, bugger off to Twitter you melt.

This was a bit like Lincoln, we seemed to control the game but were totally incapable of scoring. We've sold all our goals.

I knew when Burn missed his sitter header then gave away a cheap corner that we'd concede. The ball dropped right on Whatmough's foot to whack it in. On another day we'd have scored from Burn's header and got given away such a cheap corner.

Good games from Abrefa and Kyerewaa I think with a goal and some confidence he'll be a bit of a gem.

Not panicking yet but we need to SCORE A GOAL to settle the team. Hopefully the wombles will be more accomodating.

The award for s-housery without a doubt is heading to Huddersfield. Think that's the worst I've seen for sometime. 16 was just a c+++ all game. I counted 7 times the game was stopped for him feigning injury. 2 of the times he definitely wasn't touched. Two of our yellow cards were clean tackles as well yet rollng around seems to get you a free kick and the opposition a card.....we need a bit of that in our game.

retro royal Do wonder if Hunt's being set up for a fall, was that a vote of confidence in the week

Owner's are impatient for instant results. A revolving door creates instability. Successfull clubs stick wth their manager's. Phil Parkinson is now the 7th longest serving manager out of the 92. Building teams is long term process.

Not exactly an unexpected result. I do hope Wing is ok, that was concerning to see him go off.

Some of our passing looks really slick, that was nice to see. Getting possession out to the flanks nicely, and watching Daniel K trying to draw the final foul in the penalty area.

I felt the quality of the pass into the final man was lacking today. We seemed to get down to the line or into the area and then mis-hit the final pass.

Area of most concern for me was the vulnerability to counter attacks. Huddersfield seemed to be using pace up front, which makes it frustrating that both their goals came from set pieces.

Parkinson also had a bigger transfer budget than most teams every season and been able to have players better than the division they playing in.
This season we’ll see how good he is although they still brought in Prem quality players like Coady.
So glad to see em lose it in 96th min today couldn’t happen to a nicer club

Did they have a proper spell of pressure in the whole game? Did they ever really look dangerous? They looked like a team who'd be happy with a 0-0. They did the basics, but not much else. Indeed, as poor as we were, we could have won that, had there been better connection with a header in front of goal. Instead, they get a softly given corner a minute later, and go in front.

With last season's team I'd have been disappointed not to have beaten a Huddersfield side playing like that.

Time will tell whether that was a bad day at the office for us, or our 'new normal'. If it's the latter, and hopefully it isn't, then we are in a lot of trouble this season. On the other hand, one good player up from could make a huge difference.

One of the things I hate about modern football is that so many fans now seem to believe sacking the manager is the fix to everything. There's almost no thought to how good the squad is, and the odds of another manager doing any better.

There's just this idea that clubs just need to roll the dice again and again until they throw a six.

It's early in the season but I have sufficient insight and foresight to confidently predict the following:

current team finishes midtable at best (providing no injuries to key players) and most likely a few places above relegation zone if we get normal amount of injuries

If we sign a decent striker and attacking midfielder, we may get close to play-offs but unfortunately I don't think our back four suit our midfielders i.e. our back four are traditional, backs to the wall, agricultural type defenders who will block and tackle and head the ball all day but are very limited with the ball at their feet, while our midfielders are actually our strength and are good all-round players but will not get enough possession during games due to the limitations and cautious play and lack of confidence of our back four.

Essentially we are an unbalanced team, and to get play-offs we would need to add a ball-playing centre-back and a better quality full-back to our team on top of the attacking midfielder and centre-forward. I seriously doubt we will get those four quality players in by end of September.

So I am predicting a finishing place between 14th and 18th.

Please quote this post back to me at the end of the season. I have been brave enough to go early.
