I like Steve Coppell , but i think we need someone with a bit more guts who will stand up to Ego and ask for higher wages for players and to buy new players. I think Steve is a bit too nice and i wish he was a bit more ruthless especially towards some of the players He should have dropped players sooner or bought players in to complement the squad and that was huge failure on his part.

For sure he made plenty of mistakes BUT how much could he have done to change Madejski's view on wages. If you are not competitive and paying the going rate in whatever line of business you work in you wont attract the bright young 'uns let alone the established stars.
I hope the Chairman realises this restrictive approach may well end up costing him a lot more than increasing Sidwell or Shorey's wages by x amount.
Coppell has to stay because frankly I can see things falling apart if he goes.

Bobby Convey says much the same thing.

I think SC made an error in not spending money he had available, however at the same time the wage structure has to be in place to get the kind of players that could have carried on last season's momentum.

For me, SC is the man to lead us. As he says, he's learnt a lot about these set of players and inevitably some will be sold, some will be released but what's encouraging is the way we beat Derby Sunday. Yeah they're the worst side in Premiership history but our result and Birmingham's would have sent a clear message to the Championship that we still have quality amongst our squads.

Another encouraging sign I think we'll see is the emergence of our youth players. I'm almost convinced Alex Pearce will be actively involved in the squad. He's had loan spells now at Northampton, Bournemouth and then lately Norwich and has looked comfortable at every level. Someone like James Henry now has a chance to come into the side and progress nicely as a player while Karacan remains the best kept secret in the RFC set-up.

If as expected SC confirms he'll be staying on tomorrow, I suspect we'll see major changes over the next couple of weeks and it should breath a new lease of life into everyone connected with Reading Football Club.
