I know transfer fees are crazy but I think even these days a 'nominal' fee is not going to be anything like 500k. I'd have though knock a zero off and you'd be closer.

Not sure why a Premiership club would bother for a 'nominal' fee unless there is some technicality somewhere that means having some fee changes the nature of the deal, along the lines of never actually paying off your mortgage fully so the bank look after the deeds for you !

Again, the transfer fee is usually pretty insignificant compared to the wages.

Which may explain the different views !!

I'd have thought we'd be lucky to get him on a 3 year deal for 500k as a whole package, even a two year deal I'm not sure would add up unless he is taking a massive drop in wages.....

[devil's advocate mode]

Why are we pleased about signing an old player???

He's not exactly going to set the world alight in the prem if we get there is he?

Missed this. Good news. Now to get Khiz in (which I think would be a better long-term signing).

And continue to make sure both Andy and his family are welcomed into the area with open arms and the transition made seamless for them all.

I would be surprised if a "nominal" fee is as high as £500k......

facaldaqui I'm glad he said the fans were behind his decision. We beat ourselves up as fans, but, in our way, we are powerful fans. Griffin could certainly have picked up a club near his preferred north, but the fact that he came to us is a coup. All credit to McDermott for thinking of getting him on loan in the first place. Griffin's signature is also a credit to McDermott becuse old dogs don't want to play for bad managers: this is a sign that Griffin thinks we can go places.

He's 31.

That isn't old.

And I really couldn;t give a monkeys at this stage about whether our right back might set the world alight at some point in the future.

Based on what he did last season he improves our chances of challenging next season. We can revisit as necessary but as things stand we are NOT likely to sign a full back capable of taking the Premier league by storm any time soon. Let's settle for one who looks likley to be a key part of a decent promotion chasing side !!!

PS - I do realise the mode you were in when you posted !!!!

Funny that, because on another thread on Zurab Khizanishvilli you were bemoaning the short-termism of the potential signing of a 28 year old 8) .

General B
SLAMMED Griffin you legend. What a reception he will get on the opening day of the season.

Just need Zurab in there now.

LOL @ him having the exact same expression on his face in every picture.

Reading Chronicle

Meanwhile, former Royals loan defender Zurab Khizanishvili has been released by Blackburn Rovers.
But it is unlikely Reading will try and tempt him back to the Madejski Stadium, with Sheffield United rumoured to be tracking the 28-year-old Georgia captain.

I think we'll get him and next season we're going to really challenge. Exciting times if so.
