Snowball Ian Royal Statistics are not the be all and end all of football. There is much much more to it than that. Long has been dire almost every time he has started. He has a poor first touch and poor decision making. His record is not really in the least bit impressive, he just doesn't score enough.

Shane isn't a good player imo. He's had 4 years to prove himself and he hasn't. Some of his goals have been lucky, some have been pretty quality, but that's not good enough at this level, let alone in the Premiership. And if he *was* that good, how come he's never been linked with any other clubs! Royal Lady

(Shane’s) attitude is extremely suspect. He gets very petulent when things aren't going his way (most the time) and he reacts badly to decisions not going in his favour and is quite rash. (Ian Royal)

Completely out of his depth. (Baines)

(Ian Royal) I think we should get rid

Stupid kneejerkers.

I still don't think he is good enough at this level though. (rg6royal)

He's not a championship player as he simply is not good enough to command a regular role in the first team. He demonstrates a complete lack of ability and does not possess a footballing brain. He can't anticipate well enough how plays are going to carry out, and he's neither really skillful or pacey, which are two traits that are important for strikers in the modern game. (Riskit for a biskit)

a thread trying to defend shane longs performances...laughable (Hughsie’s No 1)

(Long) will NEVER be good enough to start regularly for a decent Reading side (mid tier 2 or higher). (Ian Royal)

Long? No chance. (Ian Royal)

A side willing to carry (Long) won't be good enough to have a 20 goal a season forward. (Hoop Blah)

Long will NEVER, EVER score 20 goals in a season at this level. (Ian Royal)

I cannot believe he will ever be a 20 goals a season player at Conference standard or higher because he, simply, isn't very good. (Schards2)

Shane, I like you as a person. You're just not a very good footballer. (Royal Lady)

Sorry, missed that one. I'm just too busy laughing at Snowball's desperate attempts to show Long is a real footballer. (Skyline)

(Long is) not strong or pacey at all, he gets muscled off the ball easily because he's built like a 12-year old. Just watch him next time he's on the ball; he won't have the confidence to shoot himself, if he has the pace to beat defenders, I have never seen him use it. (Riskit for a Biskit)

Long is the worst of our 4 strikers. He really hasn't improved much in his time here and we need to push on and let the lad further his career at a lower level IMO. I dont count Mooney because he will never get near the first team. (Deathy)

One day Long will have a cracker of a game and fickle Royals fans will love him.
Until then, everyone will hate him. Personally, I don't think he's as bad as HNA? make him out to be. (Steve Royal)

In my view Long just isn't a footballer-he might be a gymnast or a Gaelic footballer or an athlete but as far as football is concerned he is manufactured. (Victor Meldrew)

not good enough, end of. (Royalee)

Shane 'foul, foul, offside, foul' Long. (Royalee)

Shane Long will always be a polliwog, never had time to develop and now we are seeing the result. Ship em out. (Alivey)

I'm happy for Shane tonight but still not as good as Doyle...best game I think I've seen him play for us. He has potential but has he really improved through the 4 years he's been with us? Not sure about that one. Still well done lad

Hands up,

Excellent display from Long, he's really flowering at the moment. Different player to the one at Ipswich away. More than happy to see him stay and earn a starting place if we stay down. Still not convinced he's got quite enough about him if we go up to be more than 4th choice quality. I certainly don't think he'd be good enough to start regularly, and one thing we've seen this season is that he needs regular games to realise his potential.

Well done Long, please forgive my lack of faith in you.

I can't believe this has gone to 55 pages!

I hope we go up and I hope whoever manages the squad rotates all the strikers so they don't end up being run into the ground come January. It is apparent that we have 4 strikers good enough for the Championship, which means they are good enough for at least half the premiership.

I do think, esp in the Championship, that players like Doyle should
not be expected to play 46 x 90-minutes games.. or if they do they need
to have days off training.

In running, there's a syndrome known as racing tired. IMO players
who play every game don't need to train flat out once they have achieved
a good level of fitness

LOL @ going back and finding quotes from people slating Long, as if we didn't already know most football fans are fickle, me included.

Fair play to Long tho, not just last night but the month or so. We needed someone to raise their game and be a hero and maybe its gonna be him after all.

Or maybe he will have a stinker on Sunday and i boo him off

Lead the line well last night, took his two goals well. Liked the cheeky little push on the defender for his second. Still the 3rd best striker at the club and will continue to be so

rg6royal I must admit I have critisized Long in the past but tonight he proved his worth to this Club.

Didn't we get him on a free though?

Fantastic game from Shane
