Telstar have played two games since the last update. Over the weekend they beat relegation rivals 3.2 away from home. Jacob played for about an hour before being substituted. Again put in a good shift and created one of the goals. Seems to enjoy the space and time given in the Dutch game but needs to work on the decision making. He's quick and strong enough but the final ball lacks precision. Mills was an used sub.

Last night they lost at home to RKC Waalwijk 1.0....not a huge surprise as they are second in the table and have a real chance of promotion (saying that, they'll have to go some if they are to overtake Zwolle). The task was difficult to start but made almost impossible after Telstar had 2 players sent off before the hour. The winning goal came with 4 minutes left on the clock. Jack Mills was not used again but I think this had more to do with only having 10 men on the pitch from about the 20th minute and 9 for the last half hour.

Difficult to asses Walcott as he was virtually playing in his own half for most of the evening.....all I can say is that he seems to be settling in well and is building an understanding with those around him. He has made a diffrence though, Telstar generally look more of an attacking threat now and they have mangaged to add 30% onto their points tally for the season in the three games since Jacob signed.

Question for you guys. Did Jack and Jacob play together in your reserves / youth team? Would they have an understanding of each other? I ask because after watching the highlights from the weekend game again, Jacob seems to get to the line and then angle the ball back towards the centre spot or when he crosses earlier he drifts the ball towards the back post. In both cases a yard in front or behind the strikers. Maybe I was being a liitle too critical early.

Jack is a centre half so they are unlikely to have played in the same areas of the pitch, they are of the same age though so they will have played through the youth ranks together.

Didn't realise Jack Mills was a central defender. Anyway, a quick update from the weekend. I went to Telstar to watch the game against Fortuna (my team). The game ended in a 1 all draw with Fortuna scoring in the last minute. A truly undeserved point as we were under the cosh for most of the game and the equalizer looked like our striker was at least a metre off-side but that's football.

Mills made his debut at the centre of defense for Telstar and looked comfortable all night.....but then again, I would have looked comfortable against a Fortuna side lacking any attacking options, pace, ability etc etc. Difficult to say whether he had a good game or not but he seemed to deal with what little was thrown at him.

As for Walcott.....what a player. He bossed the game on Friday and was virtually involved in everything. His pace scared the shit out of Fortuna and he thorouthly deserved his goal. The ball was crossed in from the left, half cleared by Fortuna to about three metres outside of the penalty area only for Walcott to side foot (with the outside of his foot) a half volley into the net. Can't think of the English word for this type of shot but a really well taken goal that topped a very impressive game. I do you think you have something very special in him. The level of football in the Jupiler League isn't great, probably akin to your 2nd division, but it's very technical and all about keeping the ball, the complete opposite to hoofball as a certain poster from Norway seems to think. He's comfortable in possesion, his movement off the ball is impressive and his pace with or without the ball reminds me a little of a certain Michael Owen (before the injurys).

He gave a TV interview after the game and was surprisingly was very articulate. Clearly enjoying his time over here and from the reaction of the Telstar fans it's mutual.

Don't tempt fate. He could be Kebe's replacement next season.

I see Julian Kelly played in the centre of midfield for Lincoln City today, didn't know he had that in his locker.

Jacob Walcott and Jack Mills

by Hup Holland Hup » 21 Feb 2011 14:18

Firstly, apologies, but I couldn't find the "loanwatch"topic so have started a new one.

Quick update from the weekend. Both played in the 2.0 away win against Sparta. Jack had a steady game at the back and is beginning to settle in / look the part. He was much busier then the prevoius week but with Telstar playing the whole of the second half with 10 men away from home, it was to be expected. He appears to be the sort of player that does things effortlessly and his positioning is spot on.

Jacob scored again, he appeared to be playing a more central role this week. Not as spectacular as last weeks goal but well taken none the less.

Both seem to be having a positive effect on Telstar and relagation is looking less likely. Basically, Telstar managed to get 14 points from 19 games without them but have managed 10 from 5 with them. The last period of the season starts this weekend and there's optimism that Telstar may qualify for the play offs if they win the period championship....won't try to explain how this works.

Now then, If Mr McDermott reckons that Jacob could do with another season over here....please please send him to Fortuna

That might be a better goal than last weeks, not from as far out but he had more to do

On the Gylfi to leave thread....you said the Dutch league is a backyard nowhere league and then later compared it to that of the Scottish league. Admittedly, most of your scorn was aimed at the Scottish but the association was there.

Anyway, he's a better player then the clips suggest. His movement with or without the ball is good, he's got lightning pace and he can finish. The only real downside is his decision making, although, this is getting better with each game he plays. My guess is that he's not quite ready for championship football at the moment but he's certainly a talent and he'll go on to play at a much higher level then the Jupiler League and possible even the championship. He came across as "well grounded" young man during a recent TV interview. He's ticking an awful lot of boxes and even after just 5 games he's starting to attract attention. Not too many 18 year old loanees get TV interviews

If Reading are looking for an attacking midfielder, there is a certain Michael de Leeuw playing for Veendam. He's 24 and has scored 35 from 58 starts. Started his career at Willem 2 but struggled to find his way in the Dutch prem but has litterally burst into life in the Juplier (almost David Connelly esque). Contract running out and he's looking to move on.

Interesting bit of loanee and ex-Reading action on Saturday at Colchester.

Scott Golborne, now of Exeter, commits a foul and is shown a red card. Dave Mooney scores the resultant penalty, shooting past Ben Hamer.

Wasn't even in the squad which got thrashed 6-0 by Norwich. Strange.
