I was firmly IN a couple of months ago, undecided when the last poll was started a few weeks ago and now i'm on the brink of getting off the fence. This week is absolutely massive, our home record on a Saturday has been discussed a lot but have we won a midweek away game yet?

What worries me about this season, apart from the year ending in 8 (as I've mentioned before) and losing to teams in the bottom 3, is that in 1998 and 2008 I think we were in better positions than we have been this season. 1998 we didn't look like going down until we got knocked out of both cups did we?

John Smith We aren't in a relegation battle.

Hull City are in a relegation battle. They are absolutely terrible, in awful form and have Nigel Adkins as their manager. Add to that Sunderland, Burton and Birmingham and we are laughing our way to safety.

We are absolutely terrible, in awful form and have Jaap Stam as our manager

Better than Hull then?

Hull are in better form than us. Iirc they've picked up two to three times as many points as us in the last six games.

It's perfectly believable they'll be above us inside a week or two.

2 to 3 times our points tally over the last 6 games still isn't particularly impressive.

EDIT: Just had a look, they have ONE more point than us over 6 games and we have two more over 10 games.

Their form is pretty much as shit as ours.

Our next two games our crucial. Both are winnable. If we fail in these games we are in real trouble. If we win them we will be well clear of the bottom three. Just two wins. Burton and Millwall. Beat them and Stam will be safe.
Lose them and he has to go.

There's a 6/10 game form table here, as well as a 'relative form' chart, which shows PPG from the last 8 games minus PPG overall. These are a bit arbitrary as you can draw the line anywhere and then claim that's the "form" teams are in, but it gives a rough indication: http://www.soccerstats.com/formtable.as ... e=england2

FWIW, Birmingham, Forest, Hull, Sheff Weds and Barnsley are all below us in the 10 game table. We're bottom of the 6 game one.

Yeah, I looked it up a day or two ago and misremembered.

I think last 5/6 games is a good number for recent form, and 10/12 for longer term form. 10/12 because it's approximately a quarter of the season and 5/6 because it's half of that.

I’m getting annoyed at the Orlando Sá topic again, when Yann is being slated for being lazy yet Sá wasn’t exactly hard working himself. I’d go as far as saying that McDermott pulled a masterstroke that paid off big time last season by replacing Sá with Kermorgant

John Smith Why are you too scared to answer my question?

If we lose to Burton, no we still won't be in a relegation battle. If we lose to Burton and Millwall, and both Sunderland and Hull pick up points by Saturday night then yes, we will be.

Well?

Sorry. I didn't realise you were asking a genuine question. I thought your whole post was a parody. What was it?

Do you think Sheffield Wednesday consider themselves to be in a relegation battle? Because it's more than likely that we will have swapped places with them come Tuesday 10pm. Let's all step back, stop panicking and look at the bigger picture shall we?

Yes they are in a battle to avoid relegation. They would not have sacked their manager otherwise.

Okay lets look at the bigger picture:

We are 4 points away from the relegation zone
We have not won for 6 odd games in the league
We lost to the bottom team (Burton)
We lost to one of the worst teams that have been in this league for 3 years (Brum)
We didn't beat Bolton
We didn't beat Hull
Our players have no confidence
We cannot score goals
We cannot defend
We have a manager who has run out of ideas and has no clue what he is doing
we have owners who nobody has ever seen. Do they even exist?
We have a striker who last season was our main source of goals but this season is crocked.
None of our signings are good enough. Not one of them.
We are playing Burton away tomorrow. On current form there is no chance I can see of us beating them. If we lose we are 1 point ahead of them.
Even if we do draw against Millwall and forest, we could easily lose every single game until after Wolves.

Will you wake up and smell the coffee! Stop being so delusional!!!!!!

John Smith on this I've no idea how you can be so blasé about it. We are in trouble there is no two ways about it. We might not be in the relegation zone yet but the way we will soon enough.

Whilst we showed we could pick up some decent results earlier in the season they were agaianst teams who allowed us to play - we won't get that luxury again, at least not enough to exploit. Our confidence has now almost entirely evaporated now which makes the task even more challenging. Elphick and a potential new striker may rejuvenate the squad and give them some much needed direction and a lift but if they don't have the desired effect, and Stam continues here as manager (or whatever the hell he actually is because manage he does not) then I am without any uncertainty, next season we will a third tier side.

Well guess what, you don't recall correctly. They've drawn 3 and lost 3 of their last 6. One point better than us. They're falling apart and haven't got the capability to sign the quality of Elphick and are being led by a fraud. They're also still in the FA Cup which will do them more harm than good.

Then you've got Barnsley who have won just one match in their last fifteen.

Those are two teams that aren't even in the drop zone - there's four other teams around them before you even look at us. Things ain't that bad guys.

problem is, if you spend 15m on Oliveira, as we may have had to do (or 12 on Hugill or whatever) we would have blown our budget on one player. Then if he turned out sh!t or gets injured, then again we'd be asking what the DoF was playing at spunking all our money on one player.

then if that is the case, drop our interest as soon as it becomes clear hes too pricey and put efforts into plan B,C etc

Maybe the scouts thought Bod was the man, along with 19 goal Kermogant? I'm assuming BT isnt doing the scouting
.

kermorgant had one last amazing hurrah, the idea that at his age he would then come back and repeat that was deluded, as was the silly . Bod has never looked like he could be the answer, at any point in his career, as much as I like him

We do have cover at FB (Richards, Watson (be interesting to know what was known about his injury in preseason), Blackett and Bacuna if necessary should have been enough. I do also agree that a LB would be a good loan signing now (though we actually have more cover there than RB)
if youre not prepared to give them a run in the team, they aren't cover. bacuna isn't a full back. Blackett isnt either.

tired of this debate now tbh. I don't think we even have much different opinions. We can both agree Aluko shouldn't have been signed and that was the major balls up of the last window . Like I said, blame lies squarely with whoever said 'yes lets sign him rather than keep trying for a CF'. Obvs we don't know who that was. None of the other players have really been either disastrous or brilliant.

tbh whether we needed reserve full backs or midfielders/wingers has been pretty much the least of our worries.
