I would guess that gates are a good measure of resources

Average Championship Gates. Reading are 10th.

Norwich, for example, as well as being almost exactly 1.5 times our average gate also charge about a third more.
That means their annual gate receipts are TWICE ours

01 26,914 Leeds United
02 26,295 Derby County
03 25,327 Norwich City
04 23,165 Leicester City
05 22,408 Nottingham Forest
06 21,682 Cardiff City
07 21,225 Hull City

08 19,326 Sheffield United
09 19,030 Ipswich Town
10 17,309 Reading
11 16,072 Portsmouth
12 15,985 Middlesbrough
13 15,981 Coventry City
14 15,099 Queens Park Rangers

15 14,785 Crystal Palace
16 14,547 Bristol City
17 14,142 Burnley
18 13,935 Swansea City
19 13,099 Watford
20 12,156 Barnsley
21 12,104 Millwall
22 11,122 Preston North End
23 10,226 Doncaster Rovers
24 05,275 Scunthorpe United

I've got rid of everyone who went back up within the first two parachute payment seasons, not quite what I said originally, apologies. As you can see I think this places us pretty well all things told.

Especially considering that three of the four teams who seem to have done better than us are actually currently below us... two in danger of relegation. None of the other clubs who have come down since us and not gone straight back up (or look like going straight back up) have done as well as us on relegation either.

Not the full picture, but an interesting comparison that I believe goes at least part way to justifying the article's stance. Obviously you could argue that Saints, Norwich and Leicester don't count as much as we could go down in the next couple of years... though I doubt it. But it does act as a cautionary tale for us RTGs.

Ipswich: 7th / 5th / 3rd - dropped away after this and below us
Sheffield Utd: 9th / 3rd / 8th - dropped away after this, below us and in danger of relegation
Wolves: 9th / 7th / 5th
Palace: 6th / 12th / 5th - dropped away after this, below us and in danger of relegation
Reading: 4th / 9th / (12th)
Watford: 6th / 13th / 17th - recovered well now
Saints: 12th / 6th / 20th - relegated shortly after
Leeds: 14th / 5th / 22nd - relegated
Norwich: 9th / 16th / 17th - relegated shortly after

Derby: 18th / 20th / 4th - went back up
Coventry: 11th / 20th / 12th - still below us
Leicester: 15th / 16th / 19th - relegated shortly after
Bradford: 15th / 19th / 23rd - relegated
Charlton: 11th / 24th / 4 League One - relegated

Derby: 18th / 15th / (17th)

M'boro: 11th / (20th)
Burnley: (8th)
Hull: (10th)
Pompey: (18th)

EDIT: also interesting to note that only two of these teams went back up... I know Norwich, Leeds, Watford and maybe Leicester could potentially make it back this season, but three of them have been relegated. Doesn't bode well for getting back any time soon.

Maybe relegation would be best afterall.

Feel free to show how Leeds have crashed through the divisions like the other two that you actually mentioned.

As for obnoxiousI have to my knowledge one true detractor on here, where as you seem to pizz off many with your know it all attitude , and precious stats to attempt to show how your view is correct. Are you John Beck?

Useful stuff Ian.

I've expanded on it.

Wolves: 9th / 7th / 5th ONE OF THE FEW TO GET BACK WITHOUT THE BOUNCE

And those in this league?

03rd Norwich (23M in debt, double our gate receipts)
06th Leeds (Highest average gate in the Championship)
07th Leicester
08th Burnley
10th Hull
11th Watford
12th Reading
14th Coventry
18th Portsmouth
20th Middlesboro
21st Palace
22nd Sheffield United

Average position 12.5th

Burnley: (8th) DIDN'T OVERSPEND WHEN IN PREMIERSHIP, RELATIVELY CASH-RICH

Watford: 6th / 13th / 17th - recovered well now VERY CAREFUL FINANCE, YOUTH POLICY

Reading: 4th / 9th / (12th)

Coventry: 11th / 20th / 12th - still below us VERY TIGHT FINANCIALLY

Ipswich: 7th / 5th / 3rd - dropped away after this and below us SPENDING AGAIN?

M'boro: 11th / (20th) HAVE SPENT SILLY MONEY AND IT HASN'T YET WORKED

Pompey: (18th) MEGA-MASSIVE OVERSPEND, WENT TO THE BRINK OF ADMINISTRATION, TEMPORARILY SAVED BY A BUY-OUT

Sheffield Utd: 9th / 3rd / 8th - dropped away after this, below us (22ND) and in danger of relegation AND MAJOR FINANCIAL PROBLEMS

Palace: 6th / 12th / 5th - dropped away after this, below us and in danger of relegation AND MAJOR FINANCIAL PROBLEMS

Derby: 18th / 20th / 4th - went back up THEN CAME DOWN AGAIN, 18th / 15th / (17th) FINANCIAL PROBLEMS - SERIOUSLY IN DANGER OF ANOTHER RELEGATION

Saints: 12th / 6th / 20th - relegated shortly after AND MAJOR FINANCIAL PROBLEMS

Charlton: 11th / 24th / 4 League One - relegated AND MAJOR FINANCIAL PROBLEMS?

Bradford: 15th / 19th / 23rd - relegated AND NOW IN LEAGUE TWO

FOUR SPECIAL CASES?

Leeds: 14th / 5th / 22nd - relegated AND MAJOR FINANCIAL PROBLEMS, ADMINISTRATION
Norwich: 9th / 16th / 17th - relegated shortly after AND MAJOR FINANCIAL PROBLEMS? OWE APPROX £25 MILLION?
Leicester: 15th / 16th / 19th - relegated shortly after. NOW ON THE RISE BUT SPENDING MAD MONEY
Hull: (10th) MASSIVE OVERSPEND, WENT TO THE BRINK OF ADMINISTRATION, SAVED BY A BUY-OUT

I'm glad I actually decided to click on your post for once snowball. That is all fairly relevant, thank you.

I await the Schards / RL / 2ww1wc / RBlue response with interest.

Did Leeds not have points deducted TWICE?

Did they not have to sell effectively the whole squad?

Did they not stay in Division 1 for a few seasons?

And they are a MASSIVE club

Seems pretty clear that the telling year is the 4 year from all that.

I get the impression that, apart from Year 1 down where we went for it,
we have done well "shipping out" getting transfer fees in, and looking
to sign cheaper players. Pretty pleasing really.

...well it might if their ground wasn't almost entirely sold out to season ticket holders, and they charge much less for season tickets than we do. The also offer concession prices up to 21, rather than 16.

They probably don't bring in much more than we do, and have lost about £5 million for the last two seasons in a row.

Norwich are more expensive, I think

£18.41 v £16.30 RFC Adults Most Areas £18:30 Upper West)
£12:24 v £10.00 RFC Over 65
£10:80 v £10:00 RFC Over 75

£7:52 v £4:33 RFC Under 16

£7:52 v £10 RFC 17-21

4:07 v £4:33 RFC Under 12
