Ian Royal Adkins strikes me as an attempt to go back to a more Coppellesque way of playing. Perhaps less width from the wingers, but pacy attacking football with llenty of ability to pass the ball and retain possession where needed. Fingers crossed that's the case and it works.

I absolutely hope that the type of football does turn out to be similar in a way to the Coppell era, though at Premiership level hopefully with decent defensive midfielders to stop us getting caught on the counter as we did regularily during 07/08. However i cant really see the link between Coppell and narrow wing play that is suggested above? In fact it was Coppell's detail as a former winger which helped our success in this area by playing his wingers out wide either using direct speed (Convey/Hunt) or skill (Little, Seol) to beat players and cross, with the rb/lb pushing on to help as required. During Brian's tenure it became clear that the wingers were less expressive when they had the ball and attacked (Kebe's lack of runs or pushing the ball bast players and Jobi being employed in field) and the wingers were also not helped by the lack of support from lb/rb who would stick to their positions like glue when we attacked.

07/08 was mainly a problem because we only had one central midfielder good enough at that level (Cisse & Gunnarsson absolutely weren't), no decent right wingers, a crap right back and centreback who'd been ruined by injury the previous year.

You misunderstand, I think Adkins will probably play narrower than a Coppell side, which used width very effectively.

LOOK !
I was a bit drunk and I watched a load of highlights on youtube etc. Including stuff over 30 odd years , and we were just a load better than I ever remember in my 40 odd years as a fan , during the Coppell era... even when we went down , i still feel that we were better than we are now and that the league was better. Everything just seems a bit sad at the moment. But if Adkins can get me excited as I was then , then I'll be the first to sing his praises.
Deep down , I think he is right for the job , but honestly, this was not a dig at him , just a RTG look at the recent past and how much it excited me
