Royal Prince
Harpers So Solid Crew Which team have Reading football club played most since 1871?

I seem to recall reading that in a book a few years back, so unless someone else has taken over I think it might be Bournemouth?

It would have to be a southern club (ish) because of all those years in Div 3 South and I would have gone for Bournemouth but offer up Watford or Walsall or maybe Brighton.
In my time it has probably been any of those that I have seen most but the more I think of it Swindon could be thereabouts and not Aldershot as they were a bit late joining the football league and we have rarely been near them in the past 30 years or so.

That list reminds me why I hate Portsmouth and why Doncaster must hate playing us.

DULL FACT

This season Reading have not lost after scoring the first goal in any game and have only won once after conceding the first goal (Ipswich, 1st day of the season)

I conclude that scoring first in games is vital to our chances of success

Strap - is that based on some kind of match by match database? If so, could you use it to find out which season we played the most matches in London please? Thanks!

That's sounds like a good challenge. We need to agree what constitutes a London club.

Arsenal
Chelsea
Tottenham Hostspur
Wet Sham Utd
Leyton Orient
Millwall
Charlton Athletic
Fulham
Queens Park Rangers
Crystal Palace
Wimbledon (plus AFC Wimbledon as a separate club)
Brentford

Do we include :

Dagenham & Redbridge
Grays Athletic
Luton Town
Watford
Hendon
Ilford
Leytonstone
Barnet
Erith & Belvedere
Welling Utd
Boreham Wood
Bromley
Dulwich Hamlet

You choose!

Excellent. So I think the definition we'd go for (since this is a practical question) is whether it is in the Oyster zone. Which I think means it only excludes Luton from your list of possibles. And obviously, means that Reading itself is not a London club.

If you can get there on a tube station and 5-10 mins walking, it's London.

OK, sold. (Presumably the tube map will define the Oyster boundary, as I know some overground lines also now take Oyster that go beyond the tube map). I will write a bit of code over the w/e and post up the season by season total for games v London clubs. It will include League, League Play-offs, FAC, LC, AMC and FMC, but not friendlies, testimonials etc.

Intrigued as to when it might be. Possibly when we were in the PL as that regularly has 6-8 London teams? Anyway that's my guess until I run the code!! Any other takers?

Well I checked manually over the past 15 years or so, and think it is the PL years - either 12/13 or 06/07 - but am excited to see the true answer

Whilst you're at it, find out whether it is statistically true that we usually lose in the North (i.e. above Birmingham)

Away games only, obviously? But could also do a round up of records home and away v Northern teams. Maybe one for a couple of w/e's time.

Yes. I always feel more confident of a result when we play away in the south than the north (cue people listing numerous exceptions :P )
