Focher Plymouth aside, he has comfortably done enough to merit the job in my opinion.

Tactically good, team selection good, subs good, motivation good, fitness good, comes across well.

^^^ Thats the bit he has in spades over Rogers

Not once can I recall Rogers making a substitution/formation change that had a positive effect on the match. In fact often the reverse has happened.

BM on the other hand does to read the game well and make good subs/formation changes at the right time.... I include the Plymouth game in that, its just the players played like crap

Howard scored after coming on at half time against QPR. I think we only lost the half 2-1, so it was kinda an improvement on the first half.

andrew1957 What is encouraging is that the players look very much fitter than they did under BR - or is it my imagination.

I have felt for a while McD should have the job til the end of the season - so not a knee jerk response.

Especially Shane Long and Gunnarsson.

Not so fast. Lets see how well he does in the league first. We need to find out whether our boys can lift themselves in the league as well as in a glamour tie in the cup. The Plymouth result needs to be redeemed, for a start. I have not forgotten that Reading went and beat George Graham's Premier Leeds team away in the League Cup the year we went down. Having said that, McDermott's team selection and substitutions tonight were excellent and made perfect sense.

FA Cup means nothing. Different spirit.

But Brian's definitely done himself some favours, much as I hate to admit it.

Massive thumbs up for dropping Alex Pearce and making sane substitutions

Next two league games are huge though

I was so impressed by the way he spoke to ITV after the game, I actually really, really like the guy. Top bloke with his feet on the ground and gave ALL the credit to the players, when actually he deserves a lot himself. Even if its the only thing he ever does for the club it'll live long in the memory. The day little old reading knocked liverpool out of the FA cup in their own back yard...and DOMINATED the game. We could have been nearly men tonight after that lucky goal to put us 1-0 down, but we showed fight and spirit and we were sure as hell not going out to that travesty of a goal. Was it a pen? 100%, you know fvck all about football if you claim otherwise. Can't go to bed yet, buzzing.

SHORT AND CURLY I'm worried...................... After the Lord Mayors show and all that..

as mentioned on a text from handbags.

1997/98

Struggling first division Reading go to high flying Premiership Leeds and turn them over in the League cup.

We all know what happened that year!! :P

He should be given the job for the rest of the season now.

Yes, we could lose to Forest and end up getting relegated but we have to put our trust in someone ASAP in order to give them time to have the desired effect.

Having said that, it seems to me that he got it wrong at Plymouth by not selecting some fresh legs for our 2nd game in three days so I'm hoping he's learned from that mistake.

It would be wholly wrong to downgrade tonights performance because it was a cup match. We've just beaten a Liverpool team that was more or less as strong as Benitez had available and we thoroughly deserved the victory............................it was no fluke.

As others have said, this couldn't be achieved without the full backing of the squad and the tactics required to beat recent Europeans champions.

Maccy D, I AM LOVING IT!!!

Me too!
He has been working for the club for a decade now, and he still has eyes of hunger to success. We should have him permanently, before some other club may snatch him!

I still can't wipe Plymouth from my memory, but Brian certainly did a lot to win me round last night, especially with the post-match interview. Fit to burst but kept the modesty lid firmly on. Nice one MaccyD and the lads - now keep it up.

Right now the players are behind him.
The chairman will now get the Club behind him, he's paid his dues and deserves it.

With this result it can only act as a positive for the Club.

Fully deserves to be given the job from this morning.
Then we can try to move on from the absolute nightmare of the BR (little) era.

ps I still love Coppell!

Until the end of the season, yes. Then review it. Players raise their game for big nights against the top clubs, and at top grounds. We haven't won a league game under Macca yet.

It's all very well but if he's made manager how is he going to balance that with running his world best restaurant and sorting out Little Chef?

The chairman (SJM) travelled back from Liverpool on the team coach last night and there possibily could have been discusions between McDermott and SJM... one would think that we may see an announcement on the managers position in the very near future!!

Well done Brian - certainly deserves a contract till the end of the season. And everyone likes his down to earth style and lack of pretention (a welcome change from Brendon).
