New Watford manager Gianfranco Zola has admitted he won’t stand in Adrian Mariappa’s way if he wants to leave the club.

The 25-year-old defender is the Hornets’ reigning player of the year but his fine form has attracted interest from Premier League sides including Reading and Wigan.

And although Zola is keen to keep Mariappa at Vicarage Road he knows the lure of top-flight football may prove too strong.

"Adrian I know is a very good player and was one of the best last year," he said.

"Obviously we want to keep him but we understand it is not only our decision, also it's Adrian's.

"I understand he maybe has the possibility to go to the Premier League and I won't step in front of him and stop him if he wants to go."

Agree with that, Dyche did a good job. I honestly think they could of reached the playoffs this year if he'd stayed. We should still try to sign Mariappa though, especially now. Could he be unsettled now Dyche has gone???

Up from £2.5m to £3m if what the media say is true. Backs maffff and FL up on them upping the price and going back on their word.

Isn't he free next summer? Not sure if £3m is good value or not.

READING FC manager Brian McDermott is confident of making two more signings within the next week.

Royals completed their fourth and fifth free transfers of the summer this week by re-signing former full-back Nicky Shorey and nabbing Irish teenager Pierce Sweeney from under Everton's noses.

The pair arrive at an exciting time for the club following the earlier capture of Pavel Pogrebnyak, Danny Guthrie and Garath McCleary.

But boss McDermott told the Chronicle he is close to completing two more deals that will bring another couple of fresh faces to Madejski Stadium.

If we get Simpson and Mariappa I would say we had had a very good transfer window and still time to add if there are injuires - or we make a slow start in the first 3 games.
