And a certain Hal Robson-Kanu has had 44 caps for this fantastic National team albeit he has now retired after scoring 5 goals as a striker to concentrate on playing for West Brom reserves.
Yep a national team that reached the semi finals of a major tournament and knocked out a superb Belgian side in doing so. As for HRK he has had a perfectly decent career.
How many other players in our entire history have scored an outstanding goal in a major international quarter final?
Not really a fair question that.
I agree it's not a fair question. Got to say HRK has had a fairly decent career though.
Are Gunter's caps for Wales particularly relevant to whether or not he's good enough for Reading? Well, it's not like we've another Welsh full-back in the squad for comparison. (Certainly wouldn't mind Paul Dummett or Ben Davies, if anyone's offering). However, generally speaking, there have always been other Championship full-backs that could have been picked for Wales instead, but aren't. So he's clearly not the worst option available.
In a similar vein, we can be reasonably sure that Richard Keogh is better than Paul McShane, as Keogh is still getting Ireland call-ups and McShane has been a bit-part player for a long time.
The most relevant thing about Gunter's caps for Wales though, is there are some nobbers who seem to think his mere presence in the club, or on the pitch, leads to doom. Because his negativity affects everybody. Or something.
And that's where his Welsh caps matter. He's been ever-present for the last 8 or 9 years at least. And in that time Wales have been up, and Wales have been down, and Wales have been about where you'd expect.
While he's been with Reading, we've also been up and down (7th and 3rd in the Championship, FA cup semi-final are "ups" for me. Anything between 10th and 14th is about right)
It's almost as if he doesn't affect everybody after all!
Pity really, if we could control that negativity vortex, we could arrange for him to go and hide in the away dressing-room, or something.
