When I look at that pic of the Wolves game I can almost feel the atmosphere and the general buzz of a big night game at Elm Park. I was only 13 for that game yet can remember quite vividly the excitement of shuffling through the seemingly endless queues to get in and the noise under the southbank roof as we made it in just after kick off. Don't remember much about the game, just the pre match buzz that you just cant replicate.

Compare that to the feeling you get as you walk up to the mad stad. Its quite sad really.

I missed everyone of those 13 games, however, I do remember watching the national news that night, and seeing the Reading players getting featured as they left the pitch following the fourteenth game.

That in itself was a major achievement.

Didn't we get a record number of corners in the Chesterfield game? 27 or something like that?

I'm confused....the article says

Before the next game, away to Lincoln – where Reading had been beaten 5-1 the previous season – there were worries as to the fitness of Senior, unable to train since Newport. But he found a way, settling matters with an overhead kick just after half-time; a win against Wolves in midweek would equal the English record of consecutive victories, held jointly by Manchester United (1904-05), Bristol City (1905-06) and Preston (1950-51).

then

And his team retained the ascendancy without scoring again until, with five minutes to go, Wolves broke away, Ryan sweeping past Westwood to earn them a draw

So we didn't get the record?!

I was at Newport - that was the 13th wasn't it? Great days.

The record we have is for the consecutive number of league wins from the start of the season - 13. 14 is the record for consecutive league wins at any stage of a season even carrying over from the season before. Had we beaten Wolves, we would have equalled that record held by the three clubs as mentioned. We didn't and the rest is history.

Newport was the 12th, Lincoln was the 13th. Wolves would have been 14.

as far as I remember we broke or equalled the record of consecutive wins at Newport, and Lincoln extended it

Read it in the context of "and if they got a win against Wolves in midweek it would equal the English record of consecutive victories" rather than "and when they got a win against Wolves in midweek it would equal the English record of consecutive victories"

Although I went to my first game in 1983, this was the season which made me a Royal. Although the article alludes to the season being unexpected, should be remembered that RFC were unbeaten at home in the league in 1983/84 and then won a records number of away games in 1985/86. The framework was already there. Might not win many titles but like making records when we do...
