Someone said on the BFTG Arsenal thread that we regained the Reading FC Identity
(well for the day at least)
I think that is true, team, individuals, fans, club. The sense of US v them was
very strong, the passion (on and off the pitch), everything just made me buzz.
This was what was so great about the 2005-06 team, what always gelt good
when we scoured the lower leagues for hungry promising players. This
was why we loved McDermott and somehow won another Championship.
What follows is NOT a criticism of the players named, but scrabbling round looking for Prem-ready players, and then the idiocies of the Russians, and now (slightly) the one Thai import mean we have salted the family with too many players who really don't think RFC-blue.
Drenthe, Ferdinand, Guthrie, Carrico, Stuart Taylor, Halford, Pog, Williams, Murray, Bridge, none of them FELT LIKE Reading players (I'm sure there are more, this is off the top of my head). Even Mackie in that TV interview didn't talk as though he was likely to stay at RFC.
I think the heart went from RFC, we saw it for two hours this weekend, and we need to get it back, even if that means good players (for example Williams) going if they don't create the right dressing-room atmosphere.
(PS Not saying Williams IS a culprit.)
As a club we rarely do well when buying in "top talent", but we seem to do better finding rough diamonds and creating a great team ethos.
I want Gunnarsons, Doyles, Ingimarrsons, Hunt & SHunts, Longs, Murtys...
