There are two ways at looking at players in the mould (IMO) of matejovsky. He is what i would describe as a creative link and a passing player.
Creative player like him when they get the ball suprisingly want to create and will risk the more risky pass. Similar player IMO include Alonso, Fabregas, Koumas, Arteta, Huddlestone, Song, Carrick etc, and although there are all slightly different players the play similar roles in their teams. Recently Reading have been deprived of players in this mould with many suggesting since Simon Osborn so we are not used to the style of play.
The truth is (except the exceptional players i.e. Fabregas, who are amoungst the best in the world) alot of the ambitious passes often end up at the feet of the opposition, however when we watch it on MOTD all we see are the highlights, i.e. the passes which are sucessful and create chances, what you dont see are all the other unsucessful passes. It is not just passing players think how often this season Ronaldo, lampard, and gerrard have instead of passing the ball had a shot from 25-30 yards which have gone 20 yards over the bar, for every shot Ronaldo puts into the top corner he has 4-5 wild shots. The fans accept this and know with his next ball he could put it in the top corner.
Mateojovsky is no worse at passing than most of the players that are listed above, the difference is what we are used to seeing is 'simple football' where we try to kepp the ball, play it down the wing and deliever the crosses. Or we are used to see the '100% pass sucess' we see on match of the day which masks all the rubbish passes. The teams which have these players are more excepting of poor passes because they know one of them will be sucessful and create a golden chance. I personally have been suprised (with the exception of the top teams) becuase i came into the premiership expecting these world beater we see on match of the day, but the truth is only a small percent of the things players try actually come off. Also in midfiled the players listed above are covered by players who will sit back and do the dirty work, likes of carsley at everton, Flamini at arsenal, Reo coker at villa etc.
This is where the difference of opinion arises, you can look at Matejovsky in two ways
1)A creative player who tries to make things happen at every oppertunity, these people are more accepting of bad passes becuase they know at any point he could split the defence with a through ball
2) a player who gives the ball far to frequently and cheaply, wasteing possession
I personally am in camp 1, i feel there is a buzz in the stadium whenever he gets the ball and could change the game at any point, i will allow him to give the ball away becuase i know he is capable with his next ball of splitting the defence. In the last game although he gave the ball away he also created two chances off the top of my head with the short free kick as discussed earlier and when he put doyle through who thenhit the side netting.
