Question for you all- Should a football club actually make a profit? What i mean by this is, if Reading have reported a profit of £6 Million, why isnt that money spent on investing in the team so the books just show a break even? Surely Reading dont have profits or dividends to give out to anyone. Reading is a football 'Club' so as long as it can operate in the black then al profits should go to be reinvested in the team.

I'd go along with that, but I guess the arguement is that when you're making a profit you need to stockpile that for a rainy day when the side needs more investment.

....not that it isn't a rainy day now mind!

TYpical answers from Madejski on the Official site this morning.

THe Manager didn't buy players as we strengthened in the summer? WTF?
He didn't buy players because he is scared to drop his love childs & the wage structure at the club is pathetic.

jeez

for the hard of thinking:

"given that we have made a loss every year leading up to last years 6 m profit i would imagine some of it may well go back to the man who bankrolled those years of lossmaking,

also i would imagine, that with the two new players, and the improved deals for current players
mean that most of that 6 million has indeed been spent already

the maths really isnt that complex."

5 new players over two windows seems reasonable to me
with a club record buy in there too
and 25Kpw top wage isnt that bad either
next year it may even go up to 30

And for the umpteenth time, where has all the TV money/merchandising money/London Irish money/Season Ticket money/etc etc gone then? It can't ALL have gone on wages and all these players we've brought in over the last 2 years!

are you accusing the best run club in berkshire of fiddling the accounts???!!

if not then it was 6 million profit last year for the 1st time ever-i believe that includes all incomes, merchandising STs London-irish.
pretty much all reinvested in new players, wages, and facilities,
or so it appears to me
not being an accountant.

& heaven forbid that madejski should take any of the money owed back either

the extra tv money from this season, which we will get at the end of it. will go towards making this year the most profitable ever, and hopefully ST will be frozen again, or reduced if we go down,

so-orry. I was only asking. If you only get the TV money at the end of the season, does that mean that if we go down, we get this season's tv money + the parachute payment and will, therefore have about £60 million in the bank before attempting to buy new players?

Can you not see the strength of the arguement that spending some more of that guaranteed income, that as you say will make it the most profitable year ever, either in January or last summer might just have gone a long way to ensuring we get another slice of the Premiership pie next season. As it stands we have a very good chance of never seeing this kind of money again.

As has been said before; if we still manage to show a profit to the taxman after Mr Mad's accountants have done their work then it's been a very good year.
