Good, solid, no-nonsense defender, but if Liverpool have any thoughts of performing well in Europe and also breaking into the Top 4 then signing Alex Pearce ain't going to help them.

Don't get me wrong, he's a good defender. In fact the only thing that will stop him being a great defender is his lack of pace. People have said that Terry and Carragher never had any pace....but they had more than Alex. Doesn't matter how long you spend on the training ground coaching him on his positioning etc., you don't get any quicker with age.

You also didn't mention that he runs like a duck. :-)

BBC Sport says

Liverpool look set to sign Reading defender Alex Pearce. The 24-year-old centre back is out of contract at the Madejski Stadium in the summer and has rejected a number of offers from the club.

Reds manager Brendan Rodgers worked with Pearce at Reading and promoted him to the role of captain when he was in charge of the club in 2009.

Not overly sure why people are getting worked up about Pearce not signing a new contract. He's been a great servant to this football club, showed great passion and leadership, is Reading through and through. But...

He has every right to demand £30k a week.

Who would you rather play for? One of the biggest clubs in the world (with a friendly former manager) or Championship side Reading?

winchester_royal A shame that he's leaving on a free rather than signing a contract earlier in the season that would have allowed us to get 2/3 million for a player we brought up through the academy...but still as long he gets a nice fat signing on fee all's well that ends well :!:

We would get something though wouldn't we, as a contact has been offered to him and he is an Academy product.

That's my understanding too. I think a tribunal settles it. And from memory, it's based on the size of the contract we offered plus allowances for the investment made him bringing him through. I wouldn't be surprised if we pulled £1m + for him still.

He turned 24 in November. So not sure if we are entitled compensation?

I think it relates to how old he was in the season we offered the contract. Could be talking bollox tho.

As above, 24 is the cut off age for compensation. Not entirely sure where that leaves us, but I assume we'd have heard something about compensation if we were going to get it..

RoyalTank Good luck to the lad, he always played with pride and passion and I will never forget some of the goal celebrations.

He is moving upwards and you can never fault a player for that. I hope he can eventually break into the first team and have a great career, he deserves it.

The player has to be under 24 for us to get anything.......as Pearce is 24 we won't get anything

Given the failings and non-signings of the past two transfer windows and now this, can Nick(y) Hammond continue to keep coming up smelling of roses?

Should more not have been done to secure Pearce's services on a new contract before we doubtless peed him off by bringing in the guys on the really big bucks in the summer?

True, but inflated wages comes with the territory of entering the Prem. Why should the club pay more than what they value him?

I think this more comes down to his fucking agent, HRK's brother. He probably got into his ear, said, "look bruv, Pog is on like 65K a week, so you should really be askn for, like, 40K minimum"

I was upset when I first heard of the drama late last year, but Morrison's performances has proved that he is capable of the Championship, and I think that Morrison and Mariappa (if we can keep him) will be a great championship CB pairing.

He's rejected several offers. As many as eight, by some reports. It seems he had no intention of signing contract with us, so how can you possibly blame Hammond for that?

Good luck to him, but if you're going to demand high wages, then you need to put in good performances. And being the best of a bad bunch doesn't necessarily mean he's worth 30k a week. Even that's up for debate, IMO Mariappa has performed better.

Good luck to him. In a decent team he'd have been ok in the PL, nothing more. We could have done with him playing more this season, but once the damage was done and he clearly wasn't going to stay with us getting relegated, there's no point playing him.

This strikes me as a bit of a LOL @ LOLiverpooLOL signing as he isn't good enough for a side wanting to challenge for Europe let alone the Champions League.

We've got enough quality to still here to have one of the best centreback pairings in the Championship with or without him. And that's even if Gorkss leaves as well. Although we could obviously do with cover.

Unless he's gained a yard or two in pace since his self imposed exile I'll be able to watch him play for Liverpool reserves on Liverpool TV every week.

Been on the cards all season and Rodgers has been in contact with him since last summer.

Ok with him leaving have always thought he's good but certainly not irreplaceable and his poor distribution and lack of pace leave a lot to be desired.

Tbh I don't think he's good enough for a club who are pushing for Europe but that's Liverpool's problem. Good luck to Pearcey though and hopefully Rodgers will be able to manage him a bit better than he did when he was here when imo opinion he set Alex back a bit by putting too much pressure on him with the captaincy.
