Time to drop Federici

by Friday's Legacy » 20 Aug 2011 22:20

give mccarthy a chance, he deserves it. he came in last season and did very well only to lose his place unfairly to the fit again federici. he should have done better for both goals today, especially the first. he's been at fault for far too many goals already this season and he doesn't command his area. the crowd has started to voice their feelings about his mediocre performances, but is mcdermott strong enough to drop him and give the young lad mccarthy the chance he deserves? I hope so but i don't expect so!

Not again!

We have far worse positions to worry about other than the keeper.

Feds is obviously this years fall guy!

Feds is holding what's left of the team together at the moment.

He is a great keeper and will no doubt be sold soon.

Not for me (and I'm a big fan of McCarthy and prefer him), the last thing we need to do now is chop and change a lot. Fed got the nod at the start of the season, so he gets at least a couple more games before he can be dropped IMO, more likely 6.

He's not commanded his area well, but the defence with two old slow full backs, an experienced young centreback and another relatively young and slow centreback is more of a problem for me. We need to bring in a new left back and maybe a centreback (though I'd give Pearce & Khumalo another half dozen games unless we can find a really good CB to come straight into the side.

Cummings will hopefully come in for the next match, he may help improve things, especially going forward, although the real pace problem is Harte being next to Pearce. Obviously Cummings next to Khumalo is very inexperienced. Need to switch Pearce and Khumalo round really.

we have problems elsewhere yes, and we need to strengthen to improve there, but with the goalkeeper position we have two very good keepers being held back by the seemingly invincible adam federici. mccarthy is better. he proved that in his short stint in goal last season. the first standout improvement was that he bossed his area. federici doesn't do that and at his age and level of experience he should be doing it. changes need to be made in a number of positions but you need to look at the keeper asap. federici out, mccarthy in = a good start to plugging our other black hole.

After watching the first game and listening to the other three, I would suggest that perhaps Feds has given us a life line, stopping two one on ones (keeping hope alive mid second half). I am pro McCarthy, but I'm not pro 'drop the keep just because'.. Until Feds really messes up, we should stick with him.

If we brought in McCarty for Chalton, and we lost 4-0 due to a few major goalkeeping errors, would you really be saying drop Feds..?

Federici will always pull off good saves, often making them look much harder than they actually were. But his positioning and command of his area is suspect and he's error prone. And lets face it, McCarthy simply isn't going to drop 4 clangers against Charlton, so that's just not relevant. He's not Simon Sheppard ffs.

But as I said earlier, too soon to drop him.

Federici is a great shot stopper but his positioning, awareness and ability to dominate our box is not good enough.

How about we drop the players that are actually WORSE than federici...like the entire back four?

I can't believe this thread popping up when the back four are playing as bad as they are. Why are you not complaining about them. Do you want federici to starting marking strikers at corners and playing the offside trap to stop one on one's or something like today?

Get a grip. All you clowns calling for a keeper whose played a handful of games for us as if he's going to come in and be a definite improvement. Laughable.

Have you not seen the first Barnsley goal on the tele yet? Poor all round defensively but Federici has got to come for balls in that area

He stood no chance for either goal today... The first goal, jobi gave away possession cheaply (for the trillionth time) , resulting in a corner in which our defence went for a fag break and left him with cow swinging space to head home.

The second was an easy through ball that most pensioners could have caught yet our defense showed they are even slower than that!!!

In short no, I think dropping him would make an unfair scape goat and wouldn't come close to solving our huge shortfalls

No.

But I hope someone involved with the team can explain to him he needs to be more active since he can't rely on the defense, which has left him on his own too many times so far. He has not played exceptionally well as have many players on the team have not, but as others have pointed out his play, if a concern, is probably the least of our worries.

Spot on.

Feds is playing well considering our train wreck of a defence. McCarthy is not some sort of goalkeeping God.

Federici was a fault for both goals.

Whilst not being in the 'drop Feds' camp, I do think he has a major problem in his lack of ability to command the area around his goal mouth, far to often crosses and corners in the area along the six yard box go unchallanged by him. Does not matter about the defenders thats his area to dominate and he does not do it.

If he can vastly improve on that area of his game we will have a top, top goal keeper (who will probably be sold  ) rather than a just a very good one. Come on Sal Bibbo get working on it!
