Luton are 10th, 4 points behind Reading in the table and there are possibly many of us that would have taken that at this stage of the season had it been offered to us.
The Hatters have been through it all over the last couple of decades from the depths of sharing league seasons with Hayes & Yeading, Bath City and Histon to only a couple of seasons ago winning at Everton, drawing with the ‘pool and beating Newcastle in the Premier League. Their original meteoric plummet out of the league then the rapid rise back to the top seems to have rebounded them back to the level where they possibly should have paused in the first place.
And quite possibly here they shall stay for the next couple of years at least while Power Court, their new stadium, is being completed ready for a 2028/29 roll out. So this means the awkward box that is Kenilworth Road will remain very much part of FL fixtures for the next two years but if Reading could somehow produce the goods in this one it would go some way to possibly making this the last ever trip to this specific part of Bedfordshire.
At the start of the season you’d probably have expected Luton to be one of those sides where finishing above would mean promotion but they’ve struggled somewhat and have generally floated around the middle of the table, but, in itself, this is a big improvement on the last two years of failing to get away from relegation troubles.
After starting the season under Matt Bloomfield, Luton spluttered into hit and miss form which saw Matt depart after 13 games (W6,D1,L6) and former player Jack Wilshere was thrust into the hot seat after leaving his role as interim Norwich boss.
Since arriving Jack has basically experienced more of the same form wise and things are pretty middling with 2 wins and 2 draws to show from the last 6 league games. Cup wise they were dumped out of the FA Cup by losing on penalties at Fleetwood, beaten at home by Swindon in the Trophy (but reinstated after) and were narrowly defeated 1-0 at Coventry in the League Cup.
Five players arrived in the January window, as Jack Wilshere looked to make his mark on the squad. Royals summer rumour Devante Cole being one of them, departing were Jerry Yates and Marvelous Nakamba. The Luton squad is fairly good for this level despite the misfiring form. Midfielder Jordan Clark and forward Gideon Kodua (9 goals each) are the obvious threats that need to be taken care of. In addition there’s the experience of Kai Naismith and George Saville to watch plus what usually turns out to be the thorn in Reading’s side in the shape of Nakhi Wells.
I would expect the same team that fought so well to produce the late late late show against Bradford to get the nod as I’m not really expecting Marriott or Keane to suddenly be fit again though there may be a new injury problem after Ryan Nyambe was withdrawn early at HT on Saturday. Luton are expected have doubts over the availability of Teden Mengi, Cohen Bramall, Shandon Baptiste, Sverre Sandal and Elijah Adebayo.
Following their Trophy reinstatement and subsequent win over Plymouth Luton have a semi final to look forward to against Northampton tomorrow for a place in the Wembley final, against Doncaster or Stockport, so will be on a real celebratory high (or depressing low) when Reading arrive on Saturday. Therefore it would be useful if Leam could find a way to be able to turn whichever one it is against the Hatters.

Historically
Reading have a fairly decent record at Kenilworth Road. Of the 26 previous trips 7 have been won with 12 ending in defeat. The last time all three points came back to Berkshire was in July 2020 and since then Reading have popped back a further 4 times, across all competitions, drawing 0-0 twice and losing 1-0 twice which means 360 minutes since Reading last scored a goal at the ground which is quite the worst run of scoring form the club has experienced there.
