So Shaun Goater was a panic buy......

by SpaceCruiser » 04 May 2007 14:16

......according to Nigel Howe in an article on getreading (the one about Coppell having £10m to spend in the summer).

Is anyone surprised by this? I didn't know he was a panic buy, but apparently Alan Pardew failed to acquire other targets and had to settle for Goater. Probably wasn't value for money.....

Hardly a panic buy and at less than 500k hardly a massive waste of money. Do seem to remember him being signed quite late in the summer after we'd been linked very heavily with a number of other players.

Howe is full of so much shit anyway....

Great going telling everyone what Coppell has to spend.

I'd say more of a "last resort" than a "panic buy", but I see what he means.

And Goater was top scorer in his first season

And AP was playing him and he looked more of a part of things

SC had different ideas and that was the end for Shaun, may have been a rush job but not really a waste of money at the time.

Agree with that. Think he was a definite target but was probably 4th or 5th on the list and was a case of him or nothing.

The fact that Goater ended up top scorer did suggest to me that he had some value to the team, but beyond the first season he didn't really have much of a future considering his age. I think Alan Pardew tried to replace Martin Butler and Jamie Cureton at the time and he should have tried to find a replacement for the longer term. Ok, Darius Henderson and Nathan Tyson might have been considered as such.....

Still, £500K is a lot to spend on one player for one good season.

To be fair Pardew seemed to be getting the most out of the Goat before he upped shop.

Smoking Kills Dancing Doe Great going telling everyone what Coppell has to spend.

STEVE COPPELL could be handed as much as £10million in the summer to help continue Reading’s remarkable success in the Premiership.

Doesn't mean a thing! Reading always play their cards close to their chest.

Anyway, I thought it was £200m?

Howe's right - he was a panic buy, and an expensive waste of space at that.

Yeah to be fair when you read the article Howe doesn't actually say we have £10m to spend, but why let the facts get in the way of opinion!!

Is it normally Nigel who speaks about such things to the press or Nicky Hammond?

David Connolley was a target according to Pards at the fans forum but he got a feeling he was interested in the wrong things as he kept asking about money money money whereas Goater didn't even mention it but just wanted to ask about the footballing side of things.

Ironic that Connolley was at West Ham when Pards joined them.

Logically it would be Nige, setting budget's isn't Hammond's responsibility.
Coppell identifies the players he wants

Hammond goes to the board to get the money

Howe makes the money available.

Hammond does the deal

Coppell wins the trophies.
We had tried desperately to get David Connolly but he pulled out at the last minute to go to West Sham so we ended up with Feed the Goat.

Didn't seem to score much as i remember...

Yep, I seem to remember Pardew saying something about not liking his attitude at the fans forum and then signing him for West Hasm a few weeks later :?

If he took this approach with all the other strikers on his shortlist it's hardly suprising we ended up with the disgusting waste of money that was Shaun Goater.............................that's why some of us didn't feel the need to brown nose Judas when he was sat in the Upper West recently.

IIRC Connolley was already at West Ham when Pardew joined.

Correct. but almost certainly Pardew (or his agent) were already in negotiations with West Ham when Connelly decided to join them and not us .....
