What were your dreams for Reading FC.......

by Coppelled Streets » 11 Jun 2007 03:54

........when you first started watching the Royals?

I'd stand in the pub or the South Bank with my old man and uncles and listen as they said we'd never see Reading in our own top stadium, never see them reach the top division, never be a success.....

I can remember getting quite cheesed off with their negativity too. You heard more of that than you did positives!

I always believed we could do everything they said we wouldn't see in my life time, and we have.

I suppose I now have to readjust my dreams, and therefore dream that we will witness our club lift a major trophy.

Beyond that, think I'll tell my daughters it will never happen in their lifetime. Can it?

Its got to be getting into the top division.

Even if it did seem millions of miles away in '98.

My dreams were
1. To be playing the likes of Man Utd, Arsenal and Liverpool on equal terms - ACHIEVED

2. To see us in a major cup final

Like someone else said, I have had to adjust my 'dreams' a bit!

These last two seasons have been beyond my previous wildest dreams, and I still have to pinch myself.

However, the icing on the cake for me would be to see us lift a major trophy.

When I first started getting in to supporting Reading one of the lads in the year above at school used to go and watch Oxford United. They were in the top flight, we were in the third division and I just assumed that they were a bigger and better team and accepted that the team I chose to support would always be a bit rubbish.

Deep in my heart theres a trembling question
Still I am sure that the answer gonna come somehow
Out there in the dark, theres a beckoning candle
And while I can think, while I can talk
While I can stand, while I can walk
While I can dream, please let my dream
Come true, right now

1) To play for Reading.
2) To see Reading Play Leeds in a league Fixture which really meant to see Reading in the top division (however that was acheived when Leeds went down to the old second division in 86/87).
3) To see Reading play at Wembley.

First started watching RFC in 69-70. Bumped into the RFC squad in the Rendevous Cafe on the Oxford Road one sunny day in late April 1970 with my mum. Spent a wonderful quarter of an hour as a wide-eyed 11 yr old talking to my heros, (well I was dumbstruck of course, and they did most of the talking!).

As we walked away, I told my mum I'd see them win a Wembley Cup final and play in the First Division one day. She just smiled at me, as you do to a star-struck young child who has silly day dreams.

Well that little star-struck child DID get to see his dreams come true! So oxf*rd Frank Waller, oxf*rd Maxwell. oxf*rd 'em all. RFC 'til I die!

Supporting Reading since the early 70s my main ambition was that we would become a respectable lower division side. Also, and more importantly, that we would play attractive football which is why the McGhee side with Osborn, Darius et al was for me the highlight of recent years. Obviously, I'm delighted with the way things are going but as I now live on the other side of the world this would be the time that meant most to me as I got to see what, in my opinion, is the most talented football team in the lowerish divisions ever. We were at times a joy to watch, which even neutrals admitted.

Not a dreaming person, I just thought I wanted us to win the game and the one after etc.

The Prem is reality.

That we'd be in the Premiership.

Now I think it has to be Europe and winning a major trophy, although I'm very happy in the Premiership as it is thank you very much.

First started watching Reading in '89 at the age of 6. Porterfield was in charge at the time and my dream was for the match to end.

To touch Jamie Cureton. I was quite young, but I achieved it.

I remember being at an away game at Millwall in midweek and arguing with another Royals fan that one day we might make the old div 2. he said we never would.

How wrong we both were!!

I just hope that we maintain our form for next year.

I have vague recollections of being at Elm Park with my dad but as we moved out of Reading a year or so prior, one of my earliest real memories was watching the playoff against Bolton on TV with my dad, must've been about 7 and was the first football game I really got into. As such, the dream has been to get into the Premiership so the next step must be to win something of some value. Honestly can't see it happening before I have kids now but fingers crossed my son will be in a similar situation in the future with eyes set on world domination.
