Sun Tzu Salako had a contract that said if he played a certain number of games he'd get a renewed deal. He didn't play enough games. Presumably you are suggesting he should have been selected just to give him an extra year ?

That's not quite what happened. Salako's contract had a clause stating he'd get another year if he played X games (I forget the number). When he had played X-1 he was told he wouldn't be selected again unless he agreed to the clause being removed. He did so and was then selected to play some more.

Deadlock I bow to your superior memory !!

Does that count as 'wriggling out of responsibilities' or renegotiating a contract ?

If Salako was going to be surplus to requirements was it smart to give him the chance to renegotiate and play some games or blackmail ?

It counts as blackmail.
If you don't play you won't be offered a contract anywhere next season. Or if you want you can play for us and we need your input - but only if you allow us to break the condition we freely negotiated with you and your agent.

It is of course legal - but also very unethical. At the time we needed Salad on form and when he played we were better....

Surely it would only be unethical if we renegotiated his contract without asking him?

Add in a touch of lawyer and a football agent and it's a potent combination !!
