Hoop BlahSTAR Campaigns Personally, on Sunday I'll be doing what I usually do at matches, which is applauding, moaning, singing and clapping as appropriate - not to mention abusing the linesman at regular intervals and muttering "cow's arse ... banjo" whenever SHunt has a shot. I'll also have my hands full of mobile phone as I keep track of what's happening at Selhurst Park every 30 secnds.
For a couple of reasons, I'm not going to enter into a defence, debate, discussion or otherwise of these things. Others can do that if they feel the need.
The people on HNA? were always going to loudly hate them, because the default setting of HNA? is almost always to criticise - so the reaction was entirely predictable. But - and this applies to so many things, not just "clapper banners" - the population of HNA? is relatively small compared to the overall population of Reading supporters, and so, hard as it may be to believe, the views of nobbers are not necessarily representative of the majority of Reading supporters. Those with the loudest voices don't always speak for everyone, so while certain nobbers may hate them, many other supporters may not. And I can't help but feel that for a certain number, what they say here is more to do with the cyber-image they're trying to project about themselves than what they actually think.
Firstly, my reaction to these cringe worthy initiatives has nothing to do with any cyber-image but lots to do with my enjoyment of watching the sport I love and the team I've followed for the best part of 25 years.
Secondly, you say the views expressed by those who are this kind of anti-false atmosphere generating is just a loud minority voice. Can you tell me what canvassing of the support you've done to come to this conclusion?
I'm sure a high percentage of people will wave the damn things about on Sunday, but how many of those will be doing it a) begrudgingly to try and help generate the atmosphere the club wants to do everything they can to help achieve the goal, b) to take the piss out of the whole thing, c) to hide their own embarrassment, d) because they think it's a great idea and will help create the electric atmosphere that would otherwise be lacking at the biggest game of the season.
My point is that some will think this is a great idea. Some will hate it and shy away. Some will be anti it but give it a go to save it from falling on its face and killing the natural atmosphere that might just build up through the enthusiasm of the team and fans anyway.
