Waitrose extend sponsorship deal
Posted on: Thu 05 Mar 2009

Reading Football Club is delighted to announce that Waitrose will extend their sponsorship for a further two seasons, irrespective of which division the Royals are competing in.

Reading FC Commercial Director Pat Coyne said, "We have quickly developed a very positive partnership with Waitrose, and we have demonstrated our ability to deliver against their sponsorship objectives."

Royals Chairman Sir John Madejski added, "We have thoroughly enjoyed Waitrose's first season as our main sponsors and have developed a great relationship with them.

"In a difficult financial climate where even Premier League clubs are struggling to find sponsors, the fact that such a well-known and respected national brand is prepared to commit to Reading is great news. I am delighted to welcome them on board for another two seasons."

Waitrose Commercial Director, Richard Hodgson, added, "The new deal underlines our commitment to the club and our confidence in the value it brings to our brand.

"We pride ourselves on working with local communities in every aspect of our business and as a family orientated football club, these are values shared by Reading Football Club.

"In the last ten months, it has been successful in bringing the Waitrose brand to new audiences and we look forward to exploring new opportunities to develop our partnership together over the next two years."

Great, an additional 2 years with the posh supermarket stamped all over our kits.

or even worse 'Ginsters, made in Cornwall'

With Waitrose extending the sponsorship does that mean that the home and away shirts will be the same for next season?

Waitrose has RFC written all over it.

Going by the mega discounts they've been offering all member card holders since Jan, I wouldn't back on it.

Well frankly its a class supermarket and i shop there all the time, and whilst it makes me poorer, i know i eat better than all the other plebs. Rather Waitrose on the shirts than ASDA.

Anyhow its nice going to northern clubs with a supermarket emblazoned on the front that has such a low view of anything north of middle england that they dont bother even to open a shop up there.

Its no concidenece that up north they had morrisons, and down south we have waitrose. Anybody like me who was at hillsbrough the other night can see why that is. Their idea of a gourmet sandwich is a pie between two slices of bread.

High quality supermarket with a fairly good and ethical business model. Yeah, totally suited to our club.

Just as Ginsters is totally suited to plymouth. Enjoyed by those who don't know better, not very good.

Have supporters directly benefitted from the sponsorship deal? Aside from a competition to win some champagne earlier at the start of the season, I can't think of any other promotions?

Isn't it unusual for supporters to benefit in any way from the shirt sponsor? I can't recall too many instances of it but then my knowledge is fairly limited...

Yeah. I never got a free ad out of Auto trader when selling my car, or a mention on 210FM or had my house painted for free by HAT painting.

They're paying for advertising to get more business, not throw away money on supporters for no reason. I'm not sure you're getting the point.

No they don't! But they probably will, just because it's an excuse to make money.

The home and away shirts can be bought for as little as £15 at the moment, so that means that whatever division we play in next season, we'll be having a new shirt, despite having had a new one last year when we changed sponsor.
