However, isn't the rule that if you're 21 or under when the qualifying campaign starts then you qualify for the subsequent championship as well?

This is deeply wrong on many levels.

1) Not the World Cup, but the Olympics

2) Hence the Great Britain team and not those of the constituent nations

3) The Olympics is an Under-23s tournament

4) Most countries actually seem to take it seriously - Argentina and Brazil sent some of their genuine stars to the Beijing olympics. I watched most of the games I could and it was a decent standard.

5) They are allowed 3 older players

6) I'm not sure that this is a stupid rule as it allows the bulk of the team to be youngsters, the competition as a whole not to compete directly with more established football tournaments but also gives a bit of star quality to the tournament.
