RIP Daniel Jarque

Yes, who?

Espanyol's captain Daniel Jarque has died of a heart attack following a training session, aged 26.

This is a couple of years after the Sevilla player collapsed and died, and didn't a Forest player do the same not long after?

On a somewhat unrelated note I was reading the other day about the unusually high numbers of former Italian footballers dying from Lou Gehrig's disease. Apparently they suspect that it is due to the pesticides and fertilisers used on pitches in the 80's & 90's

Without wanting to turn this into the players with heart problems clique, Hoffenheim have cancelled Prince Tagoe's contract due to a heart condition.

'In the current situation, we cannot be responsible for letting Prince Tagoe take part in any sporting activities of the club. We also have no reason to believe that the situation will change and therefore we cannot maintain the contract'

I can see it happening more and more - a lot of these conditions are 'hidden', but if a player is found to have a heart defect, he runs a serious risk to his own health, in playing, and represents a serious liability to the club.

I think there must around 10 cases all in all of players collapsing or dying on the pitch from the last two years. The most disturbing one for which footage exists is Miklos Feher, who is seen smiling at the ref before doubling over and collapsing.
