ZacNaloen I guess that makes it Australias turn.

I think Australia will get it sooner rather than later but there's apparently issues with them using stadia that have local fame for being rugby or aussie rules stadia.

A bit like using Croke Park, I imagine.

Massive assumption that the Plymouth and MK stadiums will stay at 46k after the world cup.

Recently built stadia (the City Of Manchester and Olympic Stadium, for instance) can be modified to reduce capacity after the main event.

Alan Partridge Plymouth are in a mess but have got the go ahead for this absolutely ludicrous short term idea. There aren't 40,000 Plymouth fans in the world so what the hell are they thinking? Going to be fantastic in 2013 Plymouth 0 Burton albion 0 in LEague 2 in front of 4000 in a 46,000 ground.

Aren't Plymouth a bigger club than Reading though? If Reading can get 40k at a play-off final then surely Plymouth can.

There are issues as they'd effectively need full access to the biggest stadia for 2 months during the middle of the AFL, NRL and Super14 seasons. From the point of view of new / upgraded stadia then these codes would actually benefit in the long run. There's a bit of a political standoff with the various code CEOs, mainly the AFL guy, but the PM is behind the bid and will broker a deal or just bring them into line.

The Aussie bid has an impressive team running their campaign and, I think, may just sneak 2022 with England getting 2018.

Jerry St Clair So. Destroy a football club and move it 70 odd miles from it's home, just so you can leap into bed with an Asda retail development, and the FA will reward you with being a world cup host city.

Un-fukking-believable.

Arsenal's owners did the same thing, running down a club from the far edge of Southeast London and moving it. They even bribed the football league board to put them in Div 1 after WWI. As Arsenal are a success, and it happened a long time ago, nobody seems bothered by it. Given time, nobody will really be bothered about MK either.

There's football played pretty regularly at both the MCG and the Etihad Stadium in Melbourne, so the "rival code" issue isn't much of a factor. Stadiums being the wrong shape and size is more of an issue. An AFL oval's field can often be around 170m long and 140m wide.

ENGLAND UNVEILS CITIES THAT WILL NOT BE HOSTING THE WORLD CUP Print E-mail
17-12-09

FOOTBALL bosses have unveiled the 12 English cities that have absolutely no chance of hosting the World Cup in 2018.

Leeds, Bristol and Sunderland are just some of the venues set for eventual disappointment when a far more attractive country is handed the tournament next year.

FIFA head, Sepp Blatter, said: "The England bid is a very interesting one and should about 50 other countries be ravaged by some terrifying plague that makes your skin fall off and kills you wthin 90 seconds, then yes, you may well see a World Cup match in Milton Keynes."

Several cities were turned down for England's bid, with Derby, Leicester and Hull left out after bid organisers decided they wanted to stand a slightly better chance than Somalia.

Roy Hobbs, the deputy mayor of Hull, said: "I thought we'd developed into a modern, vibrant place for a major sporting event, but then I remembered all the people who live here.

"You might get car-jacked senseless in South Africa but at least you're not going to bump into a Phil Brown or that chap from the Beautiful South who looks like he's got no teeth."

An FA spokesman said: "We had some very attractive bids and the cities chosen represent the finest facilities in England. And Plymouth is in there because we want the rest of the word to think we're a nation of mentally ill pirates."

^greed but it's all really just posturing for $ and Kevin07 will fly to the rescue and then say "Sorry".

&yes, AFL fields are a little bigger but I'd rather have an oversize issue  MCG seems to be in the running and they regularly play FIFA sanctioned games at the, now, ANZ stadium which used to be the Olympic stadium so the 'field size', and more importantly the viewpoint, would be comparable to that in the MCG.

Although I've been in the prawn sandwich seats at the ANZ and it's a looooooooooong way back.

That's not really a rival codes issue though. It's the idea of pretty much shutting down the AFL for a month that's the problem, rather than them not wanting their stadiums "desecrated" by playing a rival sport there.
