massive LOLz @ Sky Sports last night having a debate over this and the Bayern Munich incident. Gerry Francis very smugly stated that there should be a league system in place for referee's where you gain points depending on your performance and then there could be promotion/relegation of refs. All at Sky Sports agreed with Francis and said what a good idea it was.

That is already exactly what happens you bunch of f*cktards.

couldn't agree more. So many people are happy to be lead by tv 'experts' yet the amount of times they contradict themselves and just get things wrong is ridiculous.

Surely at least one of them would have an interest in doing a referee course? Even working with the FA to get a better knowledge would help all parties as the ref's would hopefully then get a decent reprisentative on TV getting things decision correct.

Step forward John Salako - the only trained referee on Sky Sports regular panel.

My take on the weeks events are:

Re Arsenal game - if that incident happened anywhere else on the pitch i.e. hand the ball to the referee, he drops it to player, quick free kick, play on, nothing would be said. Penalty area is no different.

However, from personal experience i would let the players fight over the ball themselves and deal with any scenario arising out of that i.e. booking for Fabianski - by that time the defenders would be back and in position.

No

If the ref and a player bumped into each other then that's tough anyway, but there was no deliberate obstruction by the official.

Hmmm. Wenger going apeshit about the quickly taken kick. Now, remind me which was the team that took a direct free kick and scored before the other team (was it Chelsea?) was ready and caused a national furore with the manager insisting that the goal was fair.

I don't think he knew Campbell was there.

I did mention that, it was Theirry Henry who asked Poll to take the free kick quickly against Chelsea. Poll gave Chelsea no warning at all as Cech was still organising the wall.

From what i recall that was actually a rather different incident and led to the idea of the 'ceremonial' free kick.

Teams now need to make the decision to take a quick kick pretty much straight away. They can't wait a bit, let the opposition start getting organised then just take the kick. Refs will ask the question and unless the kick is taken straight away then you wait until the ref gives the go ahead, which will usually be once the defence are organised.
