World Cup adverts

by Jerry St Clair » 02 Jun 2010 08:02

John Barnes - Mars.

Lazy effort from the ad company behind this. But it does contain a sample of the best bit from any football record ever. So 2/10

I really like the John Barnes one: he looks really fat and the bloke behind him looks quite like 1990.

 Mars are one of my clients.

We told them not to change the words but they disagreed.

I can say that although John Barnes my look a little different from the 1990's model, he is an absolute gentlemen and very funny. Highlight was going round to his house in Liverpool to find him lying on the sofa watching himself in 1980s Liverpool matches. Legend.

That's ours too.

Definitely prefer that one.

Nike & Carlsberg still top my favourites. Although personally I would have delayed the Carlsberg ad to much nearer the WC itself. It's highly impactful, but by the time that the real passionate, nationalistic WC fever has kicked in (which what the ad is trying to tap into), everyone will have seen it too many times, and it loses it's cut through.

They're all gonna have to work hard to beat possibly the campest world cup ad of all time though:-

So far real losers are Pepsi and Coke...both very poor efforts. Also expect to see a lawsuit issued against the Kit-Kat one by the FA.

It's ambush marketing.

It's guilty of 'passing off' an association with the England team, despite not being an official sponsor.

However it's an extremely grey area so often just ends in lots of fees for the lawyers and not much else.

Seal We told them not to change the words but they disagreed.

So they changed one word - Chest to Mars. Poor.

One improvement is Barnes's dancing. Especially the bad boy shimmy at the beginning. Much better than looking like a total lemon with a football under his arm in the original. So, Strictly wasn't a total waste of time then.

 Just coincidence! Clients are in football, cricket (IPL) & the olympics which just happen to be popular topics on here.

I would add that it's not all fun. 16 hour day yesterday at the desk in front of powerpoint so there's plenty of downsides too!

Umbro's ad
http://www.guardian.co.uk/media/2010/jun/04/umbro-world-cup-ad?utm_source=twitterfeed&utm_medium=twitter
England football kit manufacturer Umbro is to launch its first TV campaign in eight years – but has decided not to run ads during World Cup matches.

Umbro has also eschewed the well-trodden route of featuring current or former football stars, instead opting for England supporters singing the national anthem.

In the 60-second ad, created by ad agency Anomaly, the supporters are all seen wearing the official England kit.
