WC Query for the stattos

by Skyline » 08 Jul 2010 10:25

Given it trumpets itself as 'the best league in the world', there don't seem to be that many players from the Premier League in the later rounds of the WC.

So, has anyone done a breakdown of the leagues that the WC players played in during the 2009/10 season? Be interesting to see what the breakdown is for the leagues represented by teams in the QFs/SFs/Final.

I think it's interesting that very few of the big names from the Premiership (or Champions League) have had more than average World Cups. That might just be because there's been very few players from anywhere have major impacts this time round.

Considering that none of the German squad play out side of Germany, and very similar within the Spanish squad, those two leagues should come out on top (a few of the Dutch also play in Germany).

As far as I recall, Carlos Tevez is the only Premier League representitive to score more than a single goal at this tournament, with two to his name.

I've a random question too.

Which two countries are unbeaten so far in the tournament?

Bizzare that Holland and Spain have never met in a major tournament.

Indeed - should make it an interesting final, at least we'll get a new winner of the cup

Hoping for Holland, mainly cos they are my team in the sweapstake!

There was one in one of the guides I had to the wc.
If you had the raw data, it wouldn't be too hard so sort out. Only 32 squads of 23 players. Easy.

Only 2 current PL players started in the semi-finals; Van Persie and Kuyt. Torres came on for Spain late on.

2 out of 44; best LOLeague in the World.

Pretty damning statistic of our domestic league to be fair, but a lot of the players involved have previously been affiliated with the Premier League (Robben, Xabi Alonso, Boulahrouz, Van Bronckhorst, Pique, Forlan, to name a few off the top of my head) plus the likes of De Jong would've played had he been available. Torres was also omitted pretty much down to fitness rather than ability.

Maybe the balance is shifting and what once was the best league in the world no longer is as most of the above players, along with many of their peers, opt to play in La Liga. Saying that though, David Silva, Boateng, etc will all be playing here next season.
