Which, in a sentence, proves why this squad of 25 thing is a complete nonsense

Why?

Because its being sold by the Premier League as a way of getting young, English players into sides. Arsenal have shown, in one squad that it won't change a thing.

errr ....

Gibbs will get a run at some time and I wouldn't be at all surprised if he ultimately keeps his place.

Why the authorities could not just simply say - squad size maximum of 25. The 25 to include 3 goalkeepers. No loan transfers in permitted. And then play the season with that squad. In the event that players are unavailable through injury/suspension, replacements from the U21 lists to be used.

That's pretty much it EXCEPT with the additional ruling about home grown players

Well, Arsenal and the EU have shown the farce that is "home grown". What I shoul have added is that the transfer window should be scrapped and that the only time that players can move is during the close season - unless a contract is cancelled.

The 'close season' is at different times for different leagues around the world, which is probably why there are 2 windows now.

Bit OTT to call the home grown thing a farce. Would Arsenal's HGs be eligible to play for Ingerlund if they hadn't already been picked by somebody else? I dunno actually but nothing's really as black and white as you want it to be.

They're not the only ones. Sigurdsson was, before being sold, listed as 'home grown' in Reading's squad submitted to the Football League at the start of the season. You can add Robson-Kanu, Taylor and all of our young Welsh, Irish, Scottish and other nationalities who have played in the academy who have been given squad numbers to the list too.

Define "foreigner" in that context TBM.

Clichy will get injured at some time this season - it's not sure but I would put money on that. It's also possible that Gibbs gets injured at the same time but if not, he will get his chance and he'll be okay. And Wenger will cash in on Clichy and get the plaudits for bringing English talent through at a Top 4 club.

But then, my predictions are rarely accurate.

Granted its not a perfect system either but I'd like to see something similar to the Kolpak rule that we see in cricket.

Some journalist described it well on the radio yesterday. It's not a great rule but it is also not a bad rule, and essentially it is the first attempt (of which there will be many) at having more of a focus on developing young home grown players.

I don't see how that would change much given that the Kolpak ruling applies mostly for the Caribbean and Southern African countries, hardly hotbeds of footballing talent. Besides, that would just encourage more foreigners coming to English clubs

Not true, Kolpak players can come from anywhere provided they have retired from international cricket so if a Kolpak style ruling appeared the Premiership and Championship will be full of foreign international has beens who would bring very little to the clubs they play for.

A lot of the top cricket commentators would like the Kolpak rule abolished although I believe there is some EU law which prevents it from being abolished.

It IS an EU law in itself, so that's why. Though it was altered slightly a couple of years ago so you need to have been legally working with a permit for 4 years prior to being considered eligible under the Kolpak ruling.
