And why just over that period?

Vic, they are the official UEFA coefficients that are used to rank teams and as a result nations, so they are pretty official, and decide how many European places each country gets.

AFAIK, and based on those numbers, they are based on the last five years, each team gets a 'score' each season based on its European achievements - notice Liverpool's dropping away this season after failing at the group stage, and Chelsea ranked pretty high as a result of their run of semi finals.

Spain have 2 teams in that top 10 and IIRC had 4 Champions League places
England have 4 teams in the top 10 and had 4 Champions League places.
Germany have one team but had 3 (?) places.
Presumably the fact that Italian ,German and Spanish teams have over the years won it a lot means that they get good representation and it is not just about the past 5 years?
The fact that Liverpool have won it so many times plus success for lesser teams such as Villa ,Forest and Man utd helps the cause of English clubs?

Here's a larger table, Spain has 5 of the top 21, like England. Germany has a few dotting around the 'second tier' as well. And remember the places will have been based on whatever the ranking position was at the end of last season, following Bayern's good run.
