Each year I find myself surprised at how some of the men on the list are connected to smaller Clubs. I hadn't realised Swindon and Doncaster had such rich backers and in Scotland, Ross County and Elgin City.

It's up to any individual how they spend their money of course and these men didn't get where they are today by being frivolous with their money but it's amazing to think Everton have a billionaire connected with the Club yet don't apparently have a penny to spend. I know a lot of business wealth is on paper only but if I was a billionaire and keen Everton fan I just can't see how I would be able to resist investing a few million in the Club even if I didn't try to turn them into a Manchester City.

So Sir JM is richer than Dave whelan, yet he bankrolls wigan's 40,000 + wages and ridiculous transfer fee's in the prem. Meanwhile we can't even spend what we make on our own player sales.

Ok.

Errrr, who at Wigan is on 40k+?

And what are these 'ridiculous transfer fees' you talk of?

I know Emile Heskey was on 60k a week at Wigan. Wheelan has put 200 million in to Wigan which has bank rolled there prem survival.
Why he bothers I will never know 250 quid a season ticket and still half full.

Wigan is just a rich man's toy. Reading isn't quite.

Because he's lost out on control to Stan Kronke and is now a minority shareholder.

Usmanov is also a thoroughly dislikeable and dangerous man (understatement of the century).

Who says owners are typically keen, or fans?

Evidently true enough and some are not even the owners anyway which makes it even odder to me that these people bother to buy into these Clubs. At least Club owners can use the Club to raise their own profile. I am not criticising them btw as it is not for anyone other than them to say what they should spend their money on and I'm sure they all have their own worthy motives but I just struggle to see the point of a small percentage of them buying shares.

I lean towards investments in football, a very loosely regulated and financially labyrinthine sport, are a good way to launder money.

No seriously, this year, which is the year of the rich list that you based your post on, who at Wigan is on 40k+, and what was has been their net transfer spend?

That post is completely irrelevant, football finances haven't just started this season and neither has that rich list. Since wigan have been in the prem they have spent masses on player transfers and wages with a half full ground every week. They have been completely bankrolled. They might be spending considerably less at the moment but even then the value of their current team is probably 20 times more expensive than ours. A lot of their players would be on nearly 40k if not more, dread to think what rodallega is on seeing as he was a proven international signing for 4.5 million. kirkland will be on a lot as will Gary Caldwell who turned Celtic down as he dismissed their offer as derisory. I think a large part of their squad wouldn't be too far of 40k if we are to believe the Reading wages from our seasons in the prem. Since then its inflated even worse.

As for their net transfer spend...LOL. I would suggest looking at Reading...about 40 million out and about 3-4 million spent since relegation. I would be interested to see that net spend % compared to the rest of world football, I bet its top 10.

Arsenal get a lot of stick but saying "thanks but no thanks" to this guy marked them out as a bit of a cut above. although that is a board that would rather take out dividends for themselves rather than reinvest them so I guess it's swings and roundabouts.

You can't compare Reading to Wigan, Wigan's revenue stream is 20x that of Reading's.

But hey ho, any chance to slag off Madejski I suppose...
