Quite, but I didn't realise Villa had a knack of winning the league just prior to the backpass rule coming into effect.

That rule did used to do my nut though - the keeper would get the ball, drop it at his feet, then pick it up again, roll it to a defender, who kicked it back repeat.....

Was going to ask if that was my mind playing tricks on me. Thart article talks about a pass back to the keeper then a drop-kick up field, as brilliantly illustrated by Dave Beasant; but did teams just used to knock it in triangles at the back and give it to the keeper over and over again?

Yup
Its also why they introduced the 4 step rule and the 6 second rule.....to avoid keepers wasting time.
Italia 90 was the worst for this, as soon as a team got in front they just knocked it back and wasted time
