facaldaqui Adkins's failure at Sheffield confirms what we thought of him here. But it raises the question of how he managed to do so well at Saints. I think it might show that often the most important thing is the state of the club rather than the talent of the manager. Southampton have done well under a succession of managers, from Pardew through Adkins and Pochettino to Koeman. It reminds me of Swansea, who have done remarkably under a succession of diverse managers, including Rodgers, who failed for us.
Pardew was the catalyst at Reading, looks like he was the catalyst at Southampton..... Maybe he's the one man who can go into a club and turn things around?

He did turn us round, but slowly. I distinctly remember a poll on here about sacking him, and 46% of the fine judges on Hob Nob voted sack.

I will always rate Pardew because of what he did here--and I felt West Ham, Charlton, and Southampton all got rid of him too quickly. Because one peculiarity of Pardew, in all his clubs, is that he has long losing runs--but always recovers from them. If ever there is a manager to be patient with, it is Pardew. Very underrated.

(Obviously, I still hate him because he rooked us, though.)

What has happened at Reading under Adkins, Clarke, & now Brian suggests that we are not a club that can just parachute in a manager--however good their record--and expect to improve. So long as things are muddled at the top here, no magic wand can be waved at manager level. When the top end of a club is right, maybe any half-decent manager can succeed. Look at the contrast between Leeds and Watford recently--the managers, whoever they are, succeed or fail in those clubs for reasons beyond their individual talents.

Excellent post.

The big question is, has Billy Sharp put his transfer request in early or will he wait until Nige is in his next job?

Should Warnock leave Rotherham now they are rescued again (as would be his customary habit), then can see Nige being a more-than-adequate replacement.....no need to move house either.

And good luck to him....we've had plenty worse

Armadillo Roadkill Adkins - a decent man and a good manager. But two difficult jobs in a row will have seriously dented his professional reputation.

The Blades are having a shocker but will almost certainly recover. I hope Adkins does too.

Ranieri was sacked numerous times and he famously led Greece to defeat against the Faroe Islands ! ...

Pardew has a formula/blue print. He knows what he is trying to do. He acquires the players that fit that blueprint. He didn't do anything quickly at Reading or Southampton, but he started the process of bringing in the right players and characters who can play within a certain philosophy or style. That philosophy happens to be the same as Coppell's and similar to McDermott. Although I think Brian is more flexible in his approach.

Pardew did Reading a great favour when he recommended Coppell to us, because that ensured continuity and he knew that Coppell would continue to build upon Pardew's great work at Reading rather than try to rip it all up and start again with a different vision (Rodgers).

We should try and get Coppell back to be our director of football.

Maybe we'll re-sack Brian, re-appoint Nadkins, then re-sack him, then re-appoint SC2, he'll re-talk to Fulham, we'll re-sack him, then re-re-appoint Brian, .... repeat to close
