Was playing golf yesterday with some of the inlaws family and friends, one of whom is a referee in the Cheshire league. He's a level 4 qualified ref, which makes him eligible for a few local cup finals. He was saying yesterday that if he was to push on to get the qualiifications to become a Premier League ref it would cost a total (from level 1 starting at £300) of £53k if you had no grants/funding. Apparently the FA fund part of it so the realistic total you as an individual would have to pay would be in the region of £20k. Apparently the equivalent badges done through the Welsh FA are about £20k total if I remember correctly) and to do the same badges in Germany or Spain they're almost free (but you'd obviously need to move over there and ref in their leagues).
It's not really surprising we struggle for referees when there's that level of cost involved just to undertake the badges. He's also in favour of some form of referee badge being introduced to the coaching badges so they better understand the laws, as a lot of the issues he runs into is down to coaches/players thinking they know the rules when they don't, or intepret them incorrectly.
