TBM Downing is the only left footed winger we have

Adam Johnson?

Its a poor squad, but given the injuries there arnt many better players to pick from, surprised Carrick and Richards weren't included though

tbh any England squad just looks like a list of pretty uninspiring names these days

Don't get the beef about only having four strikers. It's not like some of the others (eg Walcott) can't play in very advanced positions or as a second striker

Henderson and Dowing though :|

I'm not a massive Downing fan, but before he moved to Liverpool he was actually a fairly effective left winger. He's always done ok for England too. Let's hope he's not required to play anyway.

Johnson is pretty useless on the left though.

Disappoined but not surprised to see Terry in. He was awful at the last World Cup and was by all accounts disruptive behind the scenes (both then and for his club this season). I'd have left him and Lampard at home. Anti Chelsea bias? Maybe, but their attitudes stink and I'd be far happier if Hodgson looked to a few younger players.

He has? Better than Henderson for sure but I've always though Carrick is vastly overrated. He can barely tackle, never scores and doesn't retain possession nearly as well as he should.

yeah I've always quite liked him tbf, think he keeps hold of all the ball pretty well (a quality we admire in Barcelona but think is pointless in our own players)

Whore Jackie Fully accept that he'll start (at least the first two games) with 1 up front and 1 behind, but I would always take 5 strikers.

I'd have taken 5 forwards, but with the shape we're likely to play the likes of Young, Walcott and Oxlade-Chamberlain would pretty much count as forwards so he kind of has taken more than 4 in some ways.

I'm s bit surprised that Green has got the nod over Carson too. From what I'd read Carson has had quite a good season in Turkey whereas Green hasn't been in the best of form really has he?

'Greed. Flatters to deceive and in any other team would struggle. There's a reason United have failed to win the midfield battle in all the big games this season.

Quite like Henderson tbh, I'm sure I'll be alone in that though.

I wonder how many more hilarious tweets or fb updates I'm going to see with people expressing their disappointment that they didn't make the squad or announcing their retirement from international football?

Henderson and Carrick effectively play in different positions though so I doubt there was ever a decision of one over the other really.

I'm not sure why Henderson would be on standy considering the options he's already got in there, unless it's specifically as emergency cover for Gerrard who still seems to be hampered by niggly injuries.

Carrick is the more accomplished player, but he's behind Parker, Barry and Milner for the more defensive role and, considering where Hodgson played Gerrard when at Liverpool, probably Gerrard and even Jones as well.
