Someone's got to call heads or decide which way to kick.

BR2 Whatever.
I still feel It is a big "if" regarding whether we have a captain ON the pitch.
Nobody has convinced me that it is necessary to have one.

What would be a convincing or compelling argument in favour of needing one ON the pitch?

The world wouldn't end without one, but I can't see an argument to say one ISNT important either.

One point that hasn't been mentioned is how the captain can influence the referee and other officials. I think it was Hoddle that appointed Shearer captain and part of his reasoning was that Shearer could get closer to the ref and thus might get a couple of decisions go his way in and around the oppositions box.

A strong captain could certainly manage a referee and maybe get the odd break because of it, be that break being a few borderline decisions or just keeping a team mate out of the book.

He just does not mess around.

I'm surprised to be honest, I didn't think Capello would do it.

I think I'm glad he has though, but ask me in a few months time when the World Cup is more in view and I might have a different take on it.

I think a strong influence must've been what else was due to come out and that Terry perhaps couldn't promise him this was the end of the matter. I'd love to know what the other players have said to Capello though.

That wouldn't surprise me that much. I said earlier in the week I thought it might be an all or nothing thing and that having him in the squad must be as unsettling as being captain. Maybe not though.

The Times are saying that Rio has been named as his replacement.

The defender attended a meeting with the England manager at Wembley Stadium this afternoon, thought to have lasted only 12 minutes

Thing is m8 - we've now got two players as captain and vice captain who on current form shouldn't be in the England Squad. Not only that, one is a drugs cheat and the other has punch ups in bars and nearly gets sent down. Well done CapeLOLOLo.

Terrible decision. This may cost us our World Cup chances.

Private matters shouldn't reflect into footballing decisions. Terry is a good leader and was best suited for that role in an England shirt. To drop him all together would be ludicrous.

McClaren would have taken him away for a long weekend and probably had sex with him
