Does anyone seriously think Liverpool would have spent £35m on Carroll if they hadn't just pocketed £50m? The price tag is pretty irrelevant in this case.

I disagree. Liverpool's season should be written off in my opinion. They should've brought in Suarez for the £23million they paid which is a fairer sum than that paid for Carroll, and kept the £50million in the bank ready for the summer.

With £50million in what would be more of a buyer's market they could've replaced Torres for cheaper leaving them enough funds to bring in another player of decent ability.

Newcastle knew how desperate they were and got the most they could for Carroll, but I'm pretty sure he would not have gone for more than £20million during July or August.

But they couldn't not replace him right now - the big 4 are always in a pissing competition and they would have been crucified.

Think of the reaction if Reading had sold Shane Long yesterday and not replaced him - and then multiply that reaction by a factor of several million, on a global scale.

It's not the value of a player that counts, it's the money spunked on them.

I think that everyone agrees that Liverpool have paid over the odds/taken a risk. Lets say that they have paid £15M-20M too much. In the mad world of those trying to break (back) into the top four that isn't staggering and the money was there to spend. Any other purchase was likely to carry its own risks and would definitely be overpriced. Doing nothing would have carried its own risks.

paultheroyal Someone needs to tell him though that transfer day is not like EBay!! Put in a last minute bis and hope!!

^This. BBC said this morning that it was only admin at Blackpool's end that stopped the deal going through. Had Redknapp not tried to be cute, he might have got the player.

I wonder how much of that was deliberate on Blackpool's behalf ?

"Sorry Charley, we really tried to sell you to Spurs but the paperwork didn't go through in time." Yes, right.

He'll not be there by the start of next season. I'm wondering how his form will be between now and the end of the season.

His armband said he was a red, Torres Torres,
but Roman came and turned his head, Torres Torres,
went to the club that gives out flags,
and where the captain shags the slags,
Fernando Torres,
...keep an eye on ya bird

someone's FB status, dunno why it made me chuckle a tad but there you go.

Did Newcastle manage to bring in a replacement for Carroll? I wouldn't want to be relying on the injury prone Ameobi and Leon Best to keep my club in the league.

I take it that you're not off to Bolton any time soon then. Or you're black?

Ideal Adam should shut the fcuk up. He was happy enough to sign the contract, then he should be prepared to see it through.

Blackpool clearly in the right, they can demand whatever they want for their player who is under contract for another 18 months.
In my opinion they should just keep him until the contract expires. He is clearly more valuable to them than what they would recoup through a sale.
If relegation would cost them £30M-40M, then that's what he's worth to them.

But only if he could perform like Steve Sidwell did for us after he refused a new contract. I personally doubt that.

Even if he never plays for them again, they should make him stay until the end of his contract just to prove a point.

That they have more money than sense. We know that, they are a football club.
