Red zummerset I think that the definition given by the OP is incorrect in some respects - 'greatness' is a subjective description. You kind of know it when you see it - it is all about the history, the fans, the ground, great players etc.
For example Aston Villa aren't great and probably neither is Chelski
That riled me too actually. To talk with such authority on an issue which is always going to be subjective, I'll be kind and assume the OP was on a wind up rather than anything else.

Henry Winter wrote a piece a while back on what he called 'iconic' European clubs. Utd and Liverpool were the two English clubs included. Definitely subjective with a tad of authority though, so perhaps you best not read it.
