In the same vein, I'm getting fed up watching attacking teams 'marking' the opposition keeper at corners and free-kicks. It's blatant obstruction.

Add to the list, blocking the attacker to allow the ball to roll out. Its not "sheperding the ball out", its f*cking obstruction anywhere else on the pitch

My understanding is that if the defender doing the shepherding / obstructing is more than a yard away from the ball then it is a free kick wherever it happens on the pitch.

If he is less than a yard away from the ball no free kick.

Can't be arsed to look it up to confirm but that's what a ref told me recently.

There is no law as such in the official LOTG, it only references holding an opponent or impeding an opponents progress (obstruction). However, in the FIFA interpretations of the law it states;

Impeding the progress of an opponent means moving into the path of the opponent to obstruct, block, slow down or force a change of direction by an opponent when the ball is not within playing distance of either player.

All players have a right to their position on the field of play, being in the way of an opponent is not the same as moving into the way of an opponent.

Shielding the ball is permitted. A player who places himself between an opponent and the ball for tactical reasons has not committed an offence as long as the ball is kept within playing distance and the player does not hold off the opponent with his arms or body. If the ball is within playing distance, the player may be fairly charged by an opponent.

The 4th offical main job is the running of substitutions and the checking of substitutes equipment so it is in accordance with law 4.He/She is also responsible for control of technical areas ensuring there is only one person standing and ensuring the misconduct of managers, other staff on the bench and substitutes. Whilst he/she is also being a reserve referee. A 4th official is not allowed a screen in the technical area (unless it's the 2006 WC final where none of the officials saw the Zidane headbutt and whether the 4th official saw it on monitor or was told from upstairs is up for debate.)

Question for the masses, who is the only member of staff on the Reading bench that cannot be sent off?
