I was under the impression that relegation issues were decided over a points average over a six "season" (in fact a 3 month) period, and not in the normal way.

It certainly is complicated though

It depends on the state, I think. Argentina uses(used?) the average system over four half year seasons. River got relegated the other year, hilarity ensued.

Ah, maybe it's the Argentinian league I was confusing it with.

They could well do. I ended up looking at some of the state championships last night. Last season, Carioca had eight teams, giving two half seasons of 7 gameseach and the top four play off both time to get two winners. Promotion relegation is based on the two half-seasons being added together. There's also a superclasico or something where the four biggest teams' games against each other are aggregated and the winner of that gets a prize.

Then there's a state cup on top of that again.
