Really stupid question... but I've always wondered, Do referees call players by their name? I used to think it was by number as surely they can't know every players name in every game they ref. It seems strange, the ref saying "Oi Wayne, come here..." when they may not know the oppositions name so would have to say "Oi, number 5 come here"

Like I said, stupid, but I just wondered

They certainly do call some players by their names as I seem to recall Dave Kits...errr The Secret Footballer having a whinge that refs were overly familiar with the Stevie Gerrards, Frank Lampards and John Terrys of this world.

Non league etc... Number and if you were to say a name the opponents would be all over that as I very quickly learnt!

Premier League is a lot more personable!

I'm sure there must be some refs who dont use any names on the pitch, even if it's Rooney, Gerrard, Ronaldo, etc... they stick to "white 10", or whatever.

I'm not surprised some refs use names though

Southampton now saying they refuse to agree that Clattenburg can ref any of their matches.

It's a complete farce. They are surely guilty of bringing the game into disrepute.

The FA should summons them. Say they have to issue an apology and they will be fined. If they continue they should face points deductions.

Agree.

Absolute farce. They are in danger of alienating and embarrassing themselves.

They've alienated me, and think they're acting like they want attention and thinking they are a massive club now.

I used to like them to some extent, i.e. club gone up, with a local fan base, not flashing cash and having a solid season. Now I want them to fail miserably.

If Southampton want to forfeit (by 3-0) matches where Clattenburg is appointed, that's fine by me.

Southampton gave made themselves look incredibly stupid here. The initial complaint was nonsense but refusing to accept the decision just makes it worse.
