This isn't a stupid question so much as it is lazy, but is Shearer still at the wheel up there?

Had a quick scout around to see what the Geordie 15 are supposed to be earning:

Owen £105k, Viduka £80k, Martins £80k and Ameobi £40k. Over £7m a goal for the 22 goals those four plundered. Add in Duff £70k, Smith and Butt on £60k and Geremi – who I'd assumed retired years ago – £50k. Nolan and Barton probably on £50k too. Absolute madness.

Interesting about the relegation clauses or lack of. It was rumoured that a fair few of the more recent Reading contracts didn't feature them either.

I can't believe that for a second, especially when Marcus Hahnemann made a tongue in cheek comment at the start of the season on the differences between the Premiership & The Championship "the wages"

No way we'd have signed Kebe and Matejovsky without relegation wage rduction clauses.

Possibly Armstrong and NHunt, but the difference between Champ and League 1 is much less pronounced and relegation this season was pretty unlikely.

I heard that EVERYBODY at the club was on a 40% reduction in case of relegation - except Sidwell (as he didn't sign a new contract).

At the end of last season, a number of posters were saying we would have to have a "firesale"; if you think getting rid of a small number of want away prima donnas was a firesale, then wait to see what happens with newcastle, firstly before the end of the August, and then in January (if they aren't clear at the top of the Championship).

I spoke to a Toon supporting mate this evening, and he says that the local gossip is that Ashley is going to have to take a HUGE loss if he wants to sell up; how sick must he be to hear about pomp;ey tonight!!!

:D

Reading are hardly going to dispute that, look at the loss in credibility that Newcastle with their £50k+ XV are now facing.

Rumour was that all of the older/longer-term players, Marcus, Murty etc, had both promotion and relegation clauses inserted. Their money went up in 2006-07 and down at the beginning of this season. Sidwell's money went up, but not nearly to the extent if he'd signed the new contract offered to him. Others like Doyle, Hunt who came to the club much later, received a number of new improved contracts, during our promotion and PL seasons and the latest contracts didn't feature relegation clauses.

Nick Shorey my Lord!

Heard about this ^ on R5 and have just found it. It's the only way - but Ant or Dec?

A classic.

On a side-note: has Shearer got the badges that Premier League managers are supposed to have (unless they're too busy having brain tumours or they're too young)? I suppose he was only temporary, so got away with it, but what if they did bounce straight back with Shearer on a four-year contract? How will the badges thing work then?

Or has he got them anyway?

You get a set amount of time to qualify for them when you take up a permanent role I believe

I'd that all of those apart from maybe Martins, Nolan and Barton are into their last season of that contract.

They sound like massive wages but Newcastle have a massive income as well it's not quite the mess it would be for someone like Bolton or 'Boro carrying that wage bill.

I can't see there being a shortage of offers for Martins and the other two big earners will be out the door as quick as possible.

Ameobi on 40k is comedy. What the Fu(k was the person who offered him that contract on!?

As for Newcastle themselves. They need to completely revamp the side, get rid of the big names on massive wages that haven’t done a lot this season. They have some good youth players, combined with some good clever signings will have one of the top teams in the Championship. Pick a manager and keep the faith with him realising to get them back to challenging for Europe will be a long 10 year progress or so, and it could take 3 or 4 years to get out of this division to start with!

Unfortunately the Newcastle way will be to sack the manager by March because Newcastle are not sitting top 20 points ahead. We’ll see. It should be very interesting!

IIRC I read that King Kev scrapped their reserve team last pre-season

That would make me LOL

I read that Ameobi was on £25k not £40k FWIW.

I caught a snippet on 5Live the other day where they'd had a text/call from a Geordie who said that it wasn't the relegation that was a blip, but that their stay in the top flight had been the break from the norm and that they're simply heading back to reality.

Xisco - £50k a week and 4 1/2 years left to run on his contract.

It will be the lesser known and younger foreigners that will be costing them the most over the next few years.

They may be able to get rid of a couple, but they'll also be the ones that will more than likely find the culture shock of life in the Championship harder to get used to.

Is it safe to say that Newcastle have the worst transfer record on players in the Noughties?

Ginola and Albert weren't bad nor was that bloke Shearer but in recent times their record has been abysmal.

Albert joined in 1994, Ginola (and Ferdinand) in 1995, Shearer in 1996. Long time before the N0ughties.

Be interesting to see what happens now Ashley has put the club back up for sale. Leaves the club in limbo as they can't really tie Shearer or any manager to a deal and do any real rebuilding until this is concluded.
