Ian Royal
The 17 Bus So who would have made way?? sonko or ingimarsson??

Either, he is significantly better than both.

Exactly! The notion that we would sign Lescott and not drop one of our current first choice (including Shorey) is ridiculous.

Christ, I'd play Lescott at right-back over Rosey/Murty/whoever.

it was Ingimarsson he wanted to replace. Sonko had the raw attributes to make it, but he didn't think Ivar did.

This is the same situation with Jagielka. We thought we had him until Everton came in

I can't believe this thread, poeple have got such short memories, Shorey was brilliant for this club from the moment he signed in 2001 or whenever, there was no way on earth that Shorey would have been dropped, he was the catalyst that made things happen, i can think of two runs he made with the ball, once against Middlesbrough when we were 2-0 down, that gave us the belief to come back from 2-0 down and win. The other was the win against Spurs that Shorey made a similar run and scored, that ended a run of 5 losses on the trot.

Nicky Shorey, two words, fricking brilliant. Best left back the club will ever have.

I hope we have better when we're in the Champions League tbh.

Just out of interest, when Shorey was at his peak, who do you think would have been better than him?

He's (IMO) the best we've ever had... But to say that he's the best we'll EVER have, I hope not. I hope we at LEAST match him and if not better him.

We also tried to buy Kilgallon and Mensah: Coppel was simply trying to to strengthen the centre of the defense and central midfield - there is nothing wrong with that.

I'd agree with that.

I was assuming from TB's post that he thought Shorey wasn't the best we've had up to this point in time.

Why is this coming up now? Everyone knew we were after Lescott - it was widely reported at the time.

And he would've been bought to play centre-half, not full-back. He only moved to LB at Everton the season before last when L. Baines was injured and ended up playing really well there.

Shorey was class, not just the best LB we've ever had but also one of the best players. Shame he acted the pcunt in the 07/08 season.

Deathy Which confirms JL is a centre back first and covers left back second. It just says a lot about how little McClown thought of Shorey, even after his impressive debut against Brazil.

Replace impressive with solid, I think.

And Scott Brown as well.

Where were we a bit dodgy? Centre back and - other then Sidwell - centre midfield. Lescott would have improved on all of our centrebacks from 2005 onwards. Hell, he'd probably have improved our central midfield as well, in spite of looking like a frikking Klingon.

scott brown was to replace Sidwell, and was to consolidate our position, not try and keep us up

we also missed out on Gary O'Neill and Matty Taylor when he pulled the plug on deals at the last minute
