Shall we start a list of the mistakes made this season by (say) Ferguson or Rooney ?

If TBM can only dredge up 4 that he 'thinks' Webb made then I reckon over a season that is quite an amazingly low number. I bet Roonley makes 4 in 10 minutes of any game.

Cant agree TBM.

Webb is a quality ref, commands respect and is a decent bloke. When on line to him a few times his attention to detail was second to none and no big time
Charlie. Deserves this recognition. Hope he has a great final and brilliant for English refereeing.

I just feel there are better English refs.

Apparently Graham Poll was a good ref - it just seems the ones who stand out the most get tagged with this.

Remember the bloke in the Champions League game between Chelsea and Barca last season............quality ref :?

This has not been Webb's greatest season, he's had better seasons.

What has that got to do with whether Howard Webb is up to it or not? Webb is a decent, strong referee.

You are so right !

The PL, UEFA and FIFA just aren;t interested in who the 'good' refs are, they just go for the one who make the headlines !!!

Perhaps it's more a question of some fans simply go with the media hype that picks on one or two incidents and thinks that they represent what refereeing is about. Funnily enough all the really good decisions refs make never get any coverage. it's only when a ref makes an error (which they do, oddly) that the media and uneducated 'pundits' jump all over them.

Referees are not meant to be stars.

No reason why not.

Depends on what basis.

Collini became a star in his own right.

And referees at the lower levels have every right to have their own role models.

Would agree that referees really should not be too high profile, but much of that is in the hands of the media. Refs don;t generally go out of their way to feature in the tabloids !

IIRC (and I might not) - on the ReadingFC Football Fancast they had a long old interview with Ady Williams. He was talking about Webb and he said he [Williams] had turned out for a reserve match at Macclesfield or somewhere equally godforesaken and he was stunned to see Howard Webb there. Ady asked him what he was doing and he said "refereeing" - not that big time if he was still turning out for stuff like that.

That's an odd comment from Williams then because most of the refs do reserve games and lower profile things like that.

I've seen the Durkin and Ellery taking Reserve team games over the years, but maybe things have changed with the full time refs these days.

Surely Williams left Reading before Webb was big time anyway didn't he?

Out of interest i'm gonna ask Mike Rowley on Sunday (he's doing our game) who he rates as the best ref in England - considering he's met or worked with a fair few of them

At a guess I'll say he'll opt for himself!

good ref though - always talks to you like a mate, calling you by your first name and explaining decisions if you question them......

Steve Mac is still my fav ref though!

Yes but he played elsewhere after leaving Reading, as well you know!

I may have not recalled correctly but it was along those lines. Stranded can confirm.

regardless of whether or not he's good at the decision-making part of it, Webb's good because he's massive and doesn't take shit from anyone

You were close - it was a reserve friendly organised when he was at Coventry IIRC, fairly last minute game. He was surprised to see Webb reffing as it was so hastily arranged and asked why he was there to which Webb replied "I was in the area and they're paying me £40".

Fair do's then, I think I mis-read the original post to include it being whilst he was at Reading.

That makes more sense the way you've put it there.
